St George's flag, denied!!!

This is just to let expats in Canada know just how things are in England these days, not all sunshine and roses as some believe!!
As a soon to be expat, one of the the best times in England is World Cup time, when we, the English, show our patriotism in droves.
With 3 weeks still to go, the St George's flags are becoming more and more commonly seen flying from cars, vans, people's houses and the Pubs, except that the Pubs where I live have been told they cannot display the St George cross in case they incite racial hatred/abuse from the growing Eastern and Central European, and other foreign communities, thats from my local landlady direct!!
Do we not have a right to support our national team by displaying the English flag in our own country freely without being told not to???
For gods sake can you imagine the Americans being told they cannot fly the stars and stripes, or the Canadians being told they cannot fly the Maple Leaf in case they offend foreigners in their own country.
This is a great time of year to be English at the World Cup, it just makes me both angry and sad to see local councils and government stamping out the English pride on the occasions it rarely surfaces!!!
Well thats it rant over, c'mon England, fly the St George Cross proudly, support the national team!!!

Who told the pubs that they can't fly the flag?

Local council told the town centre pubs they couldn't fly the flag for fear of inciting the growing population of Polish, Bosnian, Turkish, Russian etc etc.
This may not be nationwide but it is still disgusting, we're in England supporting our national team, flying the national flag, I was walking through the town centre during the last world cup with an England shirt on to go to the bank and was made to feel really uncomfortable as I was being glared at by alot of the locals, it never used to be like this around here, its no wonder people, including myself are leaving.

Wait until you are an immigrant in a new country. Then you will really know what it's like to stand out in a crowd.

These stories come out every time there's a football tournament on, and every time, the whole of the UK is flooded with flags.
I wouldnt take any notice- it's a crappy attempt by the press to stir up some trouble....

As a Scot I never thought I'd support the English on anything
, but you are absolutely right.
I have a number of English friends, in England, who all feel the same and are all taking the same course of action........they are leaving.
One told me he was told it was okay to fly the Union flag in support of the World cup, but that is totally wrong as it is not a UK team who are playing, it is an English one. Why on earth should the English not be proud of that and support the players?
I can but hope that the David and Nick show will reverse some of this nonsense, but quite how I am not sure.

Maybe but its a 4 yearly event and it gets worse every time, it simply comes across to the English as we are being repressed in our own country, they should just let the people who want to to fly their flags for the couple of months it takes instead of aggravating things by banning the flags

Exile, right on, I was beginning to think I was alone in this even though I know I'm not.
Thanks for that

Yes it is about a school, but just another example of PC gone mad!!!

If you want to support the England team then fly the England football flag with the three lions
Or better still read some more on the subject before you spout off about repressed English people
edit, the Sun article is from 2008

I don't see how flying a fly makes you feel better.

On a more serious note, i find it laughable that grown individuals spit out their dummy because a local pub is unable to fly a flag
. Does it really matter? Probably not. Is the trash of a newspaper trying to fill pages, increase readership, etc? probably. At least in England you can play football in a park without the health & safety brigade jumping down your neck. Heck, you could even use your flags for goalposts

.
