Default Soup

Winter is approaching, a time when it's lovely to sit down and have a bowl of hot soup either having just come in from the cold or looking out at it.
Anyone have any favourites or suggestions?

Turkey soup made with a turkey leg in the slow cooker is very nice. I also quite like the dry soup (Knorr) packs with some cream of mushroom added when the mix is made.

I've discovered this is a very nice one.

Not a big fan of soup myself. But one I will eat is Campbells Broccoli Cheese Soup.

Our family has always been soup lovers. Perhaps it is the peasant stock in our German and Polish heritage. We prefer homemade soups and I always have soup in the freezer just waiting to be defrosted. Doesn't have to be a cold day. Soup is good even in the heat of summer. Our favorites are chicken soup, vegetable beef, beef with barley, green pea soup with a smoke ham bone, cream of potato soup with leeks, and navy bean with ham hocks. My Canuck prefers yellow split pea soup (sold in Canada and hard to find in the US) over green pea soup but will slurp both if given a bowl.

Never been a huge consumer of soup, I used to make a ginger, garlic and chicken soup which was pretty good (and great for the digestion), I've made various soups over the years but for a quick fix if I didn't have time, then it would have to be Heinz Cream of Tomato, in a mug, with a hunk of granary bread.

I use Heinz Tomato soup (plain not cream of) whenever I'm feeling off-colour. Always have a couple of cans in the store cupboard.

We often had Campbell's Hearty or Chunky soups for lunch when we were at the cabin.

I didn't know they made a Tomato soup that wasn't "cream of"

I happen to stumble across this thread. - love, love soup!! For me, I call it Kitchen Therapy because it unwinds me to make soup. IMHO, home made soup is the way to go .... and they don't need to be complicated to be great. (I never buy canned as, imo, they taste to 'tinny'. I have many 'favorites' but I will share a Pumpkin w/ Cranberry Sauce soup which I often make as its very easy to make - 4 oz of celery 4 oz leek, 3 oz Olive Oil, 1/2 tsp Cayenne, 1 tbsp fresh chopped Sage, 1.lb 4oz 1inch cubed Pumpkin (ie deskin and deseed a pumpkin, 16-20oz (2pints) Veg stock, S&P, 1/4 cup heavy cream (to start). Basically, over med heat, heat the oil, add celery and leek and sprinkle in the cayenne and sweat in the oil for about 5 mins until soft, Add S&P, the pumpkin, sage, veg stock and simmer until pumpkin is soft (about 20 mins). Blend in processor/hand blender. Add the cream. Serve with drizzled cranberry sauce (optional, but adds great flavour).

You can freeze the leftovers but a good thing to do is to make your own stock.

Just as an aside, we don't have 'heavy cream' in Canada.. the highest you can get is 35%

I'm with Siouxie. When the world gets me down Heinz Cream of Tomato sets it all right again. It's the comforting taste of my childhood.

Jinx Stilton in anything is amazing but in soup...utterly splendid...I'm just getting up but will go through my day thinking of Stilton soup.

I often make 'Strange Soup' which is made with the leftover contents of anything in the fridge and veggie box and my family generally find it yummie.

Stilton and watercress is one of my favourites.

We purchased a Vitamix blender which has a hot soup setting - pop in the ingredients, blend and it's ready to serve (https://www.vitamix.com/gb/en_gb/sho...lenders#a3500i)

Love soup but not canned soup. I've an Instant Pot so making them is now quicker and the soups are tastier too.

My dad used to make a soup from the Turkey carcass with added Minestrone packet. We would take it in thermos flasks on day trips to the Wye Valley and other places in Wales. Lovely.

Imagine doing the equivalent in Canada, sitting outside, miles away from anywhere, shortly after Christmas.

Guess what's for lunch today.

I could just about live on soup. The only canned one I like is Heinz tomato, the others all taste the same to me.

I make all sorts - if I'm feeling particularly virtuous I'll make my own stock, otherwise I'll buy stock in a carton. Minestrone, pea and ham (yellow split peas and smoked ham hock), chicken and corn, lamb with pearl barley and vegetables, pumpkin, curried lentil - endless soups and all yummy.
