Some updates.

Re: Some updates.
The airport looks a bit smaller than the one in Wings, but there's a CATSA security job on indeed (how many hours can that be with one small airline?), and night auditor, and hotel porter. In a good sized city porter can be a good paying job, but not sure about in Quesnel. As noted above the Rocky Mountaineer doesn't pay, but indeed.corn lists a baggage handler job off the train. If it isn't in the gratuity chain there won't be any money there either.

But, as I noted, the Rocky Mountaineer doesn't run every day, and not in the winter.
You'd have to go into the RM website, and check out the timetables / itineraries to see how often it does run, and when the season starts and ends.

Re: Some updates.
I took this from the random thread.
This is the crux of the problem isn't it, the part that some might not be aware of.
In order to be able to pay your rent and other costs, you need more income so you have to earn more money. Because you earn more money the disability payments are reduced or cancelled so you're either no better off or even worse off because a gain is smaller than the loss.
This move will likely reduce income but hopefully will reduce rent by a greater amount to more than cover the loss, with the added security of continuing disability payments.
"The maths" for Prince George might not seem any better - once you calculate more pay and more rent - but might the greater variety of opportunity in the bigger place make up for it?
My job doesn't pay enough to support 2 people without disability, and based on what I average per month, we will hit the exemption early Sept, which means they will claw back 100% of disability and without disability in addition to my income, we can't live in Vancouver.

Re: Some updates.
RM is one train that arrives late afternoon/early evening, and then leaves about 7:30 am the next morning.
Passengers bags have to be outside their door in the hotel by 6:30 am, and they are picked up and take to the station ............... so the job will be about 1 hour evening and the following morning on whichever days the train runs.
I think the CATSA job might involve a little more time.
There are apparently flights to and from Quesnel from Vancouver (AC and Central Mountain Air), from Victoria, from Kamloops. Probably 2 or 3 a day

Re: Some updates.
The screening position might just be casual as it's a small airport. At YVR it's 24/7/365. Do you have a full RAIC? That might go in your favour if you choose to apply.

Re: Some updates.
Air Canada has no flights to Quesnel currently. Not sure about the past.
Central Mountain has 1 to 2 per day to YVR from what I have found online.
There is some connecting service from Quesnel to elsewhere via YVR.
I dont see any other flights except 1 or 2 to Vancouver currently.
Looks like AC pulled out around 2006/2007.

Ah ok, might even be split shift. I don't really know. I don't know when the posting ends but I can find out some information for you if you want, though I'm not in again until Tuesday.

Re: Some updates.
Smithers is a lovely little town ............. we've visited often as had relations who lived there beginning back in 1970.
Town itself is small, just over 5,000, but it is the service centre for the Bulkley Valley so has a lot more services than you think.
The hospital is amazing! They managed to diagnose a problem that OH had been suffering for about 5 years ....... mind you, he'd never before seen a medic while suffering an attack! But they are connected, for example, to the Cancer Centre in Vancouver, for example, and can provide chemo in the hospital where so many other places cannot. Patients might have to travel to Prince George, Terrace or Prince Rupert for certain specialised treatment.
I don't know what the mental health services are like. Family doctors were in short supply a few years ago, not sure what the current situation is. Our relatives went for about 8 years without a family doctor beginning around 2005.
The airport is quite small, last time we flew there was just over 4 years ago (we usually drive), and they had only just got an X-ray machine for luggage ........... only one security gate.
Greyhound has cancelled its service there, or is about to. But Smithers is on VIA Rail's The Skeena route between Prince Rupert and Jasper ........... I think the service is a total of 6 times a week, 3 in each direction. The train stops overnight in Prince George in each direction, and passengers have to stay in a hotel. Basically it is one train that just goes back and forth.
They do get cold winters, lots of snow, and what is worse ......... freezing and thawing cycles 2 or 3 times a winter, so you end up with snow melting then freezing and snow falling on the top of that. Summers can be hot. Blackfly are bad about June, and mossies can be quite bad.
Good skiing on Hudson Bay Mountain, and a super cross country course.
I noticed one or two bus stops the last time we were there (summer 2014), but don't know how frequently the buses run. The airport is out of town and you would need transport there. Highway 16 runs east - west through the town, basically dividing it into two ..... that's the Highway of Tears.
As always, not sure about rental accommodation. I know we have always wept at seeing the difference in the cost of house there vs Vancouver ........... and that dates all the way back to 1970!
