Soldier beheaded broad daylight _Woolwich!

The only thing I find surprising about this kind of thing, is that it doesn't happen more frequently given the way fear and hate is whipped up on all sides. The rarity of these events actually says a lot about the tolerance and understanding of most people.

Nope, Denver on the most part isn't dreary, it's actually a really nice city with lovely suburb towns like Boulder. I wouldn't say London is dreary either for the most part. But both Woolwich and Columbine are suburbs that are very average nothingy places, that lie in the shadow of more interesting areas. It was talked about a bit in Bowling for Columbine that the expectation of people in places like that is often that you need to just fit in and conform, which likely leads to mental problems going undetected. All just a theory of course.

I would expect them to but, on what authority are they entitled to shoot civilians?

I agree that they wouldn't be able to shoot, but don't they have a guard on duty? Did the Army not even notice a murder of one of their own on their doorstep? Did they even open the gate and have a peek out?

Dylan was an undiagnosed depressive.
And both of them liked to bully younger kids.

There seem to be a lot of oddities about this incident. There are already videos around where the perp doesn't have blood on his hands when he's ranting to the stranger, comments about the absence of blood, except for the helicopter shot, which is pretty odd considering what happened, and why oh why, if these guys were acting out of revenge, did they hang around for 20 minutes waiting for the police? The whole situation is just weird as anything.

It is clear folks on duty were not aware (first pic made from Google Earth shows distances involved).

If I was a marginalised young man in London, with a keen sense of empathy to atrocities being carried out daily on people I regarded as "kin", I might feel angry enough to do something stupid. We've been through it all before with angry young Catholics feeling disenfranchised in Northern Ireland.
I don't recall seeing mass news coverage of the primary schools or wedding parties that we've dropped drones on? Do you know how many innocent Afghans or Iraqis were killed by US/UK troops this week alone? Neither do I, but I think we'd all agree it probably more than 1.
I don't offer this as justification for what the murderers did, but rather as an explanation of why so many angry, disenfranchised young radicals are on the streets right now. We created that situation, and the rise of fascist politics in the UK today will only make the tensions worse.

You spew as much bollocks as the EDL. I have spent almost 2 years in Afghanistan...you know nothing.

He was an off-duty soldier, probably not immediately identifiable as military* - he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The murderers were talking to women on camera, and warned people that 'women were safe but they would kill any man who approached.'
They wanted to kill Western men, not necessarily soldiers.
*Yes, the man was wearing a Help For Heroes t-shirt, which personally I find crass and distasteful, and I can see why some may find it find offensive.

I don't know that to be a widely held view. I certainly don't think that. The most sympathetic view of soldiers I'm exposed to is that, as individuals, their domestic circumstances were dire and we should not blame them for taking the King's Shilling or Uncle Sam's Buck. I see the purpose of the military, British, US and Canadian as being colonialism, Rhodesia then, Iraq now, Afghanistan through all ages.
Oxygen thieves....they're everywhere....

A tragedy for the young man and his family, without doubt.
When they say he's a drummer, is that his main role or his secondary role. Presumably he would be involved in combat too?
