In all fairness to the clowns, people should drive within their comfort zone in certain conditions such as snow and ice.

A vehicle without apparent merit. The centre console obstructs affectionate exchanges with one's passenger without providing a place to put a cup of coffee. There's no satellite radio. There are blind spots in all directions. It's not convertible. It doesn't stick to the road. At 4,000rpm/100mph, the thing is struggling desperately. The seat is moulded for some creature other than a person.

I'm not loving it but, while the Beetle is being rebuilt, it'll have to do.

Oh, I agree entirely, and were it not for AWD and snow tires my comfort zone would have been narrower too, but it is funny that by February their comfort zone will be up around 80 again

Although I've not owned a Matrix, I did run a Pontiac Vibe for a few years and had no such troubles with it at all (the Vibe and Matrix are effectively the same car).

It did have AWD and studded winter tyres though. It got me through 3 winters (all-season tyres for the first winter) without any real scares. There's a short steep section on the road up the hill here and my 'dirt road' driveway is over 200ft long and they can appear to be pretty daunting challenges what with the likes of deep snow, deep slush, freezing rain, wet ice, snow on ice etc... the Vibe had no real trouble with any of those conditions.

It was an automatic too.

You dont think the fact it was AWD had anything to do with that then

I think they stopped making AWD matrix/ vibes this year.. could be wrong though.

Absolutely everything to do with it having AWD Just saying don't rule out a Matrix because 'the FWD version with all-seasons is a load of crap in winter conditions'.

I think it was two years ago they dropped the AWD, but they put it back as an option with the 2009 models (which I think all come with traction and stability control too).

We own a Matrix and they are good little cars, nothing wrong with them.

I do have winter tyres this year, but even with them you can still skid a little. Just be careful and drive at a speed that you are comfortable with and don't feel like you should get pushed along by the idiot behind you.

Its all common sence really.

Overtaking is one area where AWD does make a significant difference; Crossing the snowy band between lanes in FWD, especially on all seasons can be a bit dicey. Without AWD I would still be out there stuck behind some clown going at walking pace.
I was one of those 'clowns'. 40kph was just fine for the roads I was on, I wasn't the only person driving at that speed either. I'm pretty pissed off at arrogant comments such as yours. Last year I ended up asking advice from the police after reading similar arrogant and intimidating comments on here. The police said that 40kph is a sensible speed for those conditions. If you think you have better driving skills then fine, but that doesn;t make those of us who prefer to be sensible 'clowns'.

I'm not touching the previous post with a barge-pole, but OH took 2 hours to drive the 15 km to work today. No snow tires of course but that had nothing to do with it. She works in Unionville next to Markham where a great number of people are DWA.

Me, I stayed home.
