If all the obese children in Canada jumped up and down all at once.

They might lose some bloody weight.

Well seeing as I smoke outside at home theres not really anyone else around that can be directly affected. OH hates it so I tend to stay away from him if I'm smoking too.

Parties and stuff, the smokers always congregate in an area outside so i'd say i'm doing my utmost to keep my habit from affecting others.

Good luck with the new diet - Canadian Classics work well for me

Not till you get sick and die anyway

My neighbour just passed away from Cancer. Family is devasted. Liver, 2 weeks notice. He'd lost a lung and an eye to it in the last ten years. He was a lovely fella. 61 years old.

For sure and I totally understand. However again as a personal opinion, Darcy goes off sledding at every available opportunity with the guys, and they do crazy stupid jumps and such like. He could die doing that - and many people would be devastated no more so than me.

But its his thing and he loves it - who am I to nag him to death about taking up scrapbooking (which I suppose he could sever an artery with his pinking shears or whatever).

I suppose life and the things we do, are about the choices we make and the risks we are willing to take associated with that.

I agree, although i'm biased on the subject after going through just that with my dad at the same age as your neighbour.

T'was interesting seeing my dad before he was diagnosed with cancer arguing the toss that he enjoys smoking and it's his body etc. He soon changed his mind once the consultant told him he'll be lucky to live another 2 years.

Unfortunately, people who smoke impact their own physical health but the impact on loved ones IF anything smoking related occurs it's the family and friends who suffer the longest.

I take your point, and perhaps cancer is better than Altzheimers, but three things to ponder on:

About 200 people a year die in the US and Canada as a result of snowmobile accidents, with 14000 hospitalizations. There are 4Million registered snowmobilers (50 deaths per million, often alcohol is a contibuting factor). Smoking related illness kills 435000 people a year in the US (1400 deaths per million overall...higher if you only count the smokers!), 25% of women smokers will die from smoking related illness, and on average smokers live 12 years less than non smokers. To put it in perspective, smoking kills in 90 minutes what snowmobiles kill in a year.

How happy would you be for anyone else (kids, family members etc) to try smoking because they see you doing it?

Did it occur to you that it's the addictive nature that keeps you doing it, rather than the pleasure?

According to the MIL, smoking causing cancer is a "myth" and won't accept any discussion on the subject

People try lots of things because they see others doing it, if not, everyone would be inventing their own thing. Again all down to personal choice. Education is there for people to understand the risks of not starting something in the first place.

And we are not debating the number of deaths related to smoking or sledding - I was merely commenting on the point that you raised about my family being upset if I popped off due to a smoking related illness, which I countered by the fact that my family members do things that could also cause death.

So....back to Slimming World

I was a member on and off before moving out here, and found it really worked for me.

So.....in the last few weeks I've been back on it! It's still pretty easy to follow (as most of the free foods are basic anyways)

And PAM is a great substitute for frylite

There are a number of forums where you can post the nutritional values and they will check the syns for you....so that's great to check the canadian equivalents etc.

Anyways, it seems to be working so far.....

I don,t think there is a good substitute for quorn, Superstore sells some chicken type peices- absollutely awful, couldn,t get through one! It is difficult shopping here- loved internet food shopping in the UK, and the fruit don,t always look too clever. I do alot of bulk shopping then bulk cooking, bought a few books specially about that- costco type quantities, then pop them in the slow cooker, I supposed they could be changed a little /lot to help make them lower fat etc. Which forums will help with syns values please?

Have you read about the 'extra easy' option they do now where you can combine Red and Green free foods.....and you only have 1 HeA and 1 HeB? (I think thats right!)

We are doing that at the moment, and you'd never know it was a diet! It means you can have spag bol, chilli and rice or steak of the bbq with SW chips....I think it's great!
