Fat mayor bad, billion dollar loss in leading economic commonwealth country routine. Have you considered a career in journalism ?

The government of the day, supported by all the other major parties, decided to cancel a contract. They acknowledge that the process of letting the contract in the first place was broken. It's a tawdry provincial political story - you wouldn't expect the GLobe & Mail to cover some equally dull story on the Welsh Assembly's inefficient use of taxpayers' money, would you?

Now if an individual Welsh politician were to spend an interesting evening on Clapham Common, say, then lie through his teeth about it until confronted with photographic evidence, then that would probably be salacious enough to feature in international media. I believe Ron Davies could explain how that works.

Can't see the Toronto Star carrying a piece on the mayor of Cardiff losing the plot with the taffia somehow.

Maybe we're talking about different gas hayrubes, the one I have in mind was going to be in Mississauga or Oakville or somewhere like that.

This is the most exciting thing that's happened to Canada since FLQ and stuff. They'd be absoultely mad to make him resign.

No, the idea is you sell lots of t-shirts to different people to different people, not 1 big t-shirt to the mayor. I doubt he`d want one anyway.

The way Mr Ford is performing they might want to leave room for expansion then, just in case like.

You don't seem to understand. He's not "lost the plot with the taffia" or whatever the local equivalent is. He's smoked crack, lied about it, been caught out, admitted it, acknowledged that he doesn't actually remember the detail because he was in a drunken stupor, and has refused to resign or take leave despite even his brother suggesting it would be the sensible thing to do; there's still speculation that there's more, and worse, to come.

The international media coverage is not, and never has been, about the politics - nor would this be a story at all if politics was all there was to it. No, this is a human story of a powerful man being brought low by his own stupidity, and refusing to acknowledge the enormity of the hole he's in.

Toronto is Canada's largest city. Imagine the international attention if this was Boris. Hell, he was even all over the TV last year when he got stuck on that stupid zipline thing during the Olympics. What would the world's media do with a story about him and drugs, gangs, booze, murder and extortion?

Most people beyond Ontario (let's face it, most people within Ontario too) don't give a stuff about the gas plants. SO some politicians wasted some tax money. And in other news, a bear took a dump today in a forested area. And it was revealed that the Pope may well, in fact, be a Catholic.

Is there a mechanism to remove him? Will he be able to serve out his term if he insists on doing so?

Unless he's hauled off to jail, no, there's no mechanism to remove him. At the end of this term I think he has a good shot at being elected for another one.

I must admit to already considering the similarities. the Rowley character, ultimately has pathos though, and Rob Ford doesn't.

Id be surprised if drug use or illegal activity would trigger that, who would be left!

Someone ( I forget who, a Toronto councilor I think) is trying to introduce an emergency bill in the provincial legislature to provide a legal basis for ditching him. I doubt the province will interfere though, its far too good for all the MPPs that Rob Ford is deflecting all the media attention away from them.

I do understand, I`m not sticking up for the guy, apart from his news value I don`t see how he can stay on. Its the fact that his fall from grace suits The Guardian`s agenda, the gas plant story wouldn`t although if Rob Ford was reponsible for it there would be a fair chance The Guardian would report it.
The Boris story was during the Olympics, the worlds premier all rounds sports competition, once in a 4 year event, in one of the worlds major cities and Toronto is......a city in Canada where next to ***** all ever happens. They report about a new royal doll here. The taffia remark was just comparing the boyos in the hood, doing whatever illegal activity they do. :D

Had it been a photo of him in his teens or early 20's then it would be OK, we all make mistakes when young and experimenting is part of growing up.

It wasn't though, its recent and while he is serving in a public position.

He's in charge of the police, how can the police arrest someone for possession when their boss is a known user.

The fact he won't resign just shows off his low morals, can't understand anyone who sticks up for him.

As mayor hes also "Chief Magistrate" of Toronto...

Im guessing the people who framed the laws never suspected that these circumstances would apply to an elected mayor, so there is no legal framework to give him the boot. We must rely on either his conscience or the electorate to see to his departure. Fat chance of the former, slim chance of the later.
