Mother refused free parking at Tesco due to baby formula purchase

Since when did one have to pay for parking to shop at Tesco?

Quite common at supermarkets in built up areas. Usually you can get part of the parking refunded with £10 shop.

I don't care how 'normal' it is, this article is disgraceful and Tesco should be ashamed.

The other one that gets me is asking people to pay to park in hospitals...

Tesco generally shabby service in my experience. Wholeheartedly agree on hospital parking, a very lamentable practice.

I initially thought it bizarre but in Canada it seems part and parcel of funding the hospital so I'm now thinking of it as a small price to pay for the benefits. (not that I have to pay, what with it being 5 minutes walk and I don't drive anyway)

If it's free, how does one police it in terms of people using it with no hospital reason for doing so.

So should a non-breast feeding mother get a doctor's note to present to supermarket stating her inability/unsuitability to breast feed?

Don't know. I didn't read the article. I just replied to Bristol's question about whether you need to pay for parking at UK supermarkets?

Nope, sorry. Funding does not have to come from service users that happen to need to park there. Am sure in this technological age there are a myriad of ways to police the parking - where necessary. Many hospitals are far removed from shops offices etc.

I attend a major (teaching) hospital in Toronto downtown which has a small underground parking lot. If parking fees didn't exist there would be absolutely no way I could park there, because it would be full, probably 24/7. It is expensive (for me $25 a time) but I'm glad to pay it, given my disability. For those visiting patients, the hospital has excellent public transit access. Fortunately I only attend 2-3 times yearly now.

Well clearly paying for access is better than not paying and not having access. But, for example, if users had their licence plate scanned and had to confirm somewhere in the hospital (or later on a website) that they were bonafide of face a $100 charge, that would work too. London uses such a system for the entire city with many access points and millions of vehicles. I imagine a small downtown Toronto hospital could do similar.

What about disabled parking places? They put put them right near the doors. If they want to stop people parking in them illegally they should put them at the very back corner of the car park.

hahaha...how does that work...will the disabled person have to walk all the way thru' the car park to get to the entrance...or do you advocate a shuttle service...

Generally not from what I have seen but they are operated by private companies that take a scan of your plate number and if you park over 3 hours you get a ticket in your mail.

You don't have to pay the private car parking tickets though from what I have been told but that's in the UK.

The place that gets me is Kingsgate Mall in Mt Pleasent. You get a few hours free but you are not allowed to go off site of the mall otherwise you can get a ticket. What if I want to grab something from No Fills in the mall and then pop across the road to Starbucks to grab a coffee...

After receiving a $50 city of Van fine as I violated a bylaw by parking somewhere after 7am in the morning (got to my car at 7.20am on a Sunday morning and received the ticket at 7.07am) I refuse to bring the vehicle downtown now - I'm not giving those *insert inappropriate word here* the satisfaction!

Hospital here has a paying parking lot. However, there's a scheme for immediate family members of inpatients, & for outpatients in regular treatment - it isn't advertised but doc/clinic gives either free parking chit, or helps organise free transport for those without cars (if eligible).

Walnut the whippet.

Could that happen anywhere but the UK? Cute story, though.
