I suppose that to be true, you wouldn't have posted it otherwise, but in fifteen or twenty years of mostly leash free dog walking in Ontario no one has advised me of it.

I used to walk along Queen Street to the St Lawrence Market and put a leash on the dog when I arrived so I could tie him up while I shopped. One day a woman gave me a lecture that, if the dog were properly trained, he'd wait outside the market without a leash. A market full of butcher's shops!

If a vet determined a dog was a mongrel rather than characteristic of a particular breed I'm not sure what there'd be to disagree with. It's conjecture anyway, we don't know what Victoria's dog looks like.

Depends on the environment that you live in, doesn't it? For the majority of my time in Canada I've lived next to crown land and/or out of city limits. Never owned a lead or needed one for our dogs.

Yes it depends on what the vet says for sure. Although a vet won't risk him license I wouldn't think. But a mongrel isn't a breed so the vet would say it has the characteristics of whatever type of dog. The better bet is for the vet to say it's a boxer cross or bulldog cross or something like that.
I lived on 8 acres surrounded my crown land so I would open the door in the morning and my dogs could wander wherever they wanted to. That was in NS. Now in ON they can go about 6'! Poor girls...

Thanks for all the comments and apologies as I don't know how to multi quote !!

My staff has the face of one but a smaller non stocky body. She's also long legged. I wish I could put a photo up as that description sounds very odd!!

We don't know where in BC we want to be yet but ideally somewhere similar to where we are here in the Kent countryside where I can walk them for miles and not have to worry about dog parks or keeping them on the lead at all times. They are used to running in fields!

Your home sounds ideal !!!

I am a seriously sensible dog owner and am always aware of Surroundings including other dogs. Mine have never attacked any one or any dog so finding the right place for all of us is a huge deal!

As there's no breed specific legislation in BC you wouldn't need to worry what he looks like anyway. Somebody mentioned bylaws, that's what you would need to adhere to. As long as you do then pooch will be just fine.

How terribly sad. I don't care what people say there are some breeds that seem more prone to attacking unprovoked.
