The street was covered in sheet ice, this was a bother when I fell and again when the poor dog was unable to scrabble enough grip to crap.

The drive was wintry, two of three miles of not being able to see forward at all, using the poles to centre the car on the road, followed by one lane having impassibly heaped snow and so having to drive in the other. I don’t like to do that as, technically, each lane should contain vehicles going in one direction and there’s a danger of collision. It’s particularly problematic on windy days as the nearby highway is closed and the heavy vehicles use the road I take. Two people close to me have spun off the road so far this winter. Fortunately, both were driving 4x4s and so were able to get back on to the road without having to encounter the police and be fined for their mishaps. This morning, on a sweeping snow covered curve, I felt the tail go out but didn’t lose it.

-17 tonight or -20, people in the lift wondered to each other. I thought that it’s inevitable that I will eventually be killed driving to or from work, I hope it’s not the day after a cold snap.
So, I assume you wished for and acquired a rural property. Perhaps you should have been more careful what you wished for.

It's going to be really nice in Regina for the next while, good for everyone but those wishing for the lake to set up for ice fishing. In about 3 weeks there should be a cold snap that allows skidoos or quads if not vehicles.

I think we're pretty much the warmest place in Canada at present. Image courtesy of EC's new mobile app....

Yay for both coasts, then (although the 'periods of rain' aren't happening yet - it's just a somewhat cloudy sky here on Vancouver Island. And positive double digits

Not fun at all.. and today appears to be deteriorating as we speak.. the wind is picking up even more, it's getting colder. Environment Canada is warning of snow squalls, high winds and whiteout potential outside of the GTA and yes, forecast is for -20c windchill overnight and into tomorrow.

It's not even bloomin December yet

Talking to 'locals' they tell me that they remember as teens and even in the 1960's through 90's there often being snow from October through to May.. I suppose we should count our blessings.. but I'm not looking forwards to winter this year at all.

Stay safe

I don't recall wishing for anything other than immediate consumables, an Austin-Healey, a Jaguar and some acts for which this is not the site. All else is accident.

The roads are much better now, there's power, internet, a roaring fire and a substantial stock of weeknight beverages. All will be fine for 12 hours or so.

I had to look that up. The only Austin Healy I knew was a rugby playing very funny newspaper diarist.

I recall one time while on safari, we ran out of supplies, and forced to subsist on food and water for several days....

Lovely. I had one of those. 1958 model. At speed the top would bow up in an arc above the windscreen and the rain would come blasting in. This is the one I have now:

My daughter and I took it to the dealer for service a month or so ago on a day with mixed rain and snow falling. We had the top in place but not the side screens. In that particular model the rain/snow mix forms a swirl, like a mini tornado, at the outer edges of the base of the windscreen; the plume descends from there hitting the centre of one's outer thigh. The objective of having a sports car is, of course, to relive the experiences of one's youth. Mission accomplished.

The picture was taken in high summer, you can see that there's only ice at the edge of the lake.

It was -23C this morning according to the sensible car thermometer.
