Conkers certainly work in Somerset. We live in a barn conversion and had (note past tense!) a ton of spiders.
Also, I use a few drops of citronella oil mixed with water in a spray bottle and spray all around. Lovely smell but spiders hate it apparently!
Probably wouldn't work with black widows though...
