Hardly just British. Some of the more 'sporty' Italian car manufacturers refused to build automatics until 20-30 years ago; I seem to remember Alfa's response to requests for automatics was particularly scathing.

I prefer automatics now, long drives as it was for a US road trip a few times, and when I took one through the Rockies from Vancouver, it was far easier and less tiring in an automatic. My first car had auto drive, so once I was at the max speed limit on a highway I hit the button and took foot off pedal and relaxed and steered while the car did the rest.

Some Canadians prefer manual as a transmission is costly to replace, though I never had any problems with mine in the two cars I had at different times.

Heaven forbid you want to see them on roundabouts, they don't have a clue and roundabouts are very rare over here too.

I've got both, auto for traffic and a standard for track and fun use.

Plenty in BC. Would make some good YouTube videos, Canadian drivers on roundabouts.

Standard or Auto - I go out of my way to buy standard, although it is becoming much harder to find. Just got a Nissan Frontier Standard, but the dealer would not get it in until I gave him a hefty deposit. Perosnally I find standards give much more control of the vehicle in snow, ice and muddy conditions.

When I went to buy a domestic truck, auto transmission was an 'optional' charge. No problem I tell the dealer, I want standard anyway, 'but they are not available in standard' the dealer tells me, so why the hell would they advertise auto as an optional charge, it's not exactly optional.

I have to say after spending a hellish 6 days in the traffic in and around LA I would want an automatic and wouldn't even consider a manual, I wouldn't even consider living and having to commute in anything like the traffic in LA either - not for any amount of money.

Nope not enough - seriously I would rather live my life here than be rich there, my version of hell on earth.

So you'd turn down $50M per year, paid on a weekly basis, with no contractual length of period?

You're one strange lady.

Youd have just come home with 500k in your pocket ;)

Count me in.

Bought a manual Mazda 3 Sport a year ago once I got fed up of driving my wife's automatic. Much more fun :o)

On the subject of cars, how many people have the whole Union Jack license plate thing going on? There are a few of us around Red Deer.

If it meant that I had to live and drive in LA and the surrounding area then no I wouldn't want the money, I really wouldn't life would just be too miserable. If I only had to spend a week a year and fly in by helicopter and not travel on the roads then yes maybe. But then with the poverty and hopelessness I saw I don't know how I could do it. It is the worst place I have ever visited, no pretty bits even Beverly Hills wasn't that nice - I've seen nicer.

And believe me where I live right now is no picnic but it's not the hell hole I've just seen.

We had one on the Jag we had - because it was a British car, we only had the jag for a bit, it's now buried in the garage somewhere - you might see this spitfire around town in the next few weeks though, thinking of getting it on the road for Rockin' Red Deer this coming weekend, we had registered two different cars for the event but other things have got in the way and they are not quite ready...Again teh Union Jack is on it as it's a brit car and it was easier than respraying the boot lid after a temporary repair whilst we located a new old boot lid.

So you'd not stick it out for 2 weeks, get paid, go home, pay off all debt, and relax?

You know you would
