Reading the article it says 4 months for that theft (and other stuff) and a different 4 months for several T shirts. That's quite a difference.
Right at the end was a reference to two burglary charges. Would that have been the two stores or additional offences?

I'm a bit late to the party on this one. (Been busy having a life etc.)
I was at school during the London riots of the early 80's, and these seem strangely reminiscent. The m.o. is different due to mobile phones etc., but many of the rioters are just doing the same as many of those back in the 80's. In fact, there have been many instances of rioting in the years since. Mostly in taking place during the summer.
There has always been a sub-culture of young people in Britain with not much to do with themselves.
If you have little or no education, with no real prospects of a decent job, and your main concern is how you look in the eyes of your peers, then why not tool up and go shopping?
Was this really any surprise? The youngsters just decided to stop killing each other for a change, and let out their energy on something more profitable.
With the Police largely powerless to act effectively in a liberal society where everybody is on camera. Can you blame them for not wanting to get stuck in. With each baton stroke, each one risks a potential man-slaughter charge.
