What do you think about David Starkey's quote about the riots? Is he accurate in his analysis of modern British culture or was it just a racist rant from a disconnected and privileged old man?

I don't find the argument persuasive. Well, who would? An obvious hole is that the old chap gets his blacks confused, it's American slang via rap music that has entered common speech, not Jamaican patois.
I think the defining characteristic of these riots is that they weren't about anything, there was no excuse, however feeble, unlike the case of "race" riots or student demonstrations getting out of control, these were purely consumerist events. The people involved were not even nominally supporting a cause, they were just out for themselves, disregarding all convention. They acted as if there's no such thing as society. One might have thought the Telegraph might carry an editorial lauding their clarity of motive, their devotion to the values of that women the paper once held in great esteem.

Thought this was interesting. It seems that the fear of ferral youth gangs brawling and robbing was palpable even in Vicotrian times.

Hi, I just read your post, couldnt agree more, live here is getting a drag,I live in scotland but drive all over UK,and it is the same in every part of the country. I am trying to find a job in NS could you give me any advice on that Province ,you know the usual stuff like housing,crime the people etc, you can contact me directly on thanks. Henry
