Having a currency union with the Pound has always seemed a bit counter intuitive if Scotland is to want independence, and the fact that Westminister is removing this ambiguity from the voters' considerations is a good thing.

Quite.

Because their economy was centrally planned and their international trade was relatively low (manageable) in decades past.

Of course, but that'd be the case in Scotland too. (joking). The point is, it can be done, and was, irrespective of whether the US was happy about it.

Yes, of course, currency pegs are not new. Scotland may well do that, it provides some monetary consistency with flexibility if needed.

Good. We agree. But frankly if I were a separatist Scot (which I'm not, on both counts) I'd look to join the eurozone rather than use nasty english currency.

Euro coins and notes can have wee reminders of hame, just like Scottish pound notes.

Republic of Ireland Pound was set at parity with Pound Sterling for a long time............

I think if Osbourne,Alexander and Balls a.k.a. the gang of 3 state tomorrow they are going to rule out any currency union,it will be one of the biggest political own goals since Maggie introduced the council tax illegally 1 yr early in Scotland!

I think that's the bigger picture which hasn't yet surfaced in the debate (at least in any substantive way). Does Scotland want to be more aligned with Europe or with Britain? Europe may well be the right economic framework for Scotland. In terms of social policy and justice, it seems closer to Europe than it is to England, so maybe it something Scots will start to embrace. No bad thing.

Not really. They're doing everyone a favour. Salmond only wants the Pound because he knows the typical punter will be scared to relinquish it. Economically it doesn't make sense to separate and keep it.

Is that another clandestine reference to the Irish pound alluded to earlier? ;)

And extend the disastrous Euro rouble club from PIIGS to PIIGSS?

Spot on....this is that clown Salmond's "plan"....bang on about independence...but not really independent, clearly he hasn't given any of it any thought beyond the predictable Braveheartesque speeches.

The Euro is still a work in progress. The disasters have been somewhat self-inflicted in the PIGS, but the the resolve of Germany has so far been quite impressive. The Eurozone remains a very large trading area and with growing political integration the Euro seems more likely to last than fail. Whether Scotland would suffer from CEB policies will depend on how it runs its economy. If Scotland separates from Britain I think closer ties with Europe is the way to go. Indeed if its economy is as sound as the Yes vote contends, Scotland will (marginally) strengthen the Eurozone.
