The Euro is still a work in progress. The disasters have been somewhat self-inflicted in the PIGS, but the the resolve of Germany has so far been quite impressive. The Eurozone remains a very large trading area and with growing political integration the Euro seems more likely to last than fail. Whether Scotland would suffer from CEB policies will depend on how it runs its economy. If Scotland separates from Britain I think closer ties with Europe is the way to go. Indeed if its economy is as sound as the Yes vote contends, Scotland will (marginally) strengthen the Eurozone.

Spot on....this is that clown Salmond's "plan"....bang on about independence...but not really independent, clearly he hasn't given any of it any thought beyond the predictable Braveheartesque speeches.

If I remember correctly, the Chinese didn't let foreigners have them for most of that time. When foreigners did need them, they bought them on the black market, for whatever the real exchange rate was.
Whether or not that's advisable is a different point. |

Look mate, we've moved on from that red herring. The point is that there's no reason at all why one currency can't be linked to another one.
Why would Travelex exchange Scottish pounds for UK pounds at 1:1 just because the Scottish government say so? |

I'm not so sure of that. Spain can and will veto their admission to the EU for fear of opening the door to Catalunia.

We move on hopefully!
If you are looking for a currency that ties itself to another, look no further than Hong Kong. It has had a tie to the us $ @ 7.8 for decades. Despite 1997 and china taking over, so without doubt, you can tie your currency to another. If you are so keen to keep the pound, you could link up with Egypt. ;-) |

That doesn't seem like a great plan for an independent country. |

The Scots would use their own passport. A Scottish passport. |
