Why not just attribute the quotation? I don't think I'll bother looking it up this time, as without knowing who said it, I haven't bothered reading it.

It's all relative Montreal Mike.....you said this "i see the point but it is their hotel after all isn't it?". Am guessing you have kids, brothers and sisters? If what you are saying is, and am assuming here? That in this day and age bigotry has a place? What would you do if you son/daughter/brother/sister starts dating or marries someone that looks different? |

Am not holding my breathe on a sincere answer by the way, but still just wanted to post the question. As any rational person will know, happiness in relationships is not restricted to someone that looks like you, and if you are foolish enough to let difference in colour impact your dating decision even when the person happens to meet all your checks in the box, then that is a real shame. |

Re: gays not welcomed
First of all I agree with the ruling but what is discrimination?
dis·crim·i·na·tion [dih-skrim-uh-ney-shuhn] Show IPA noun 1. an act or instance of discriminating, or of making a distinction. 2. treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination. 3. the power of making fine distinctions; discriminating judgment: She chose the colors with great discrimination. 4. Archaic. something that serves to differentiate. Is certain discrimination allowed in law you betcha it is yet we seem to be fine with this:confused: Lets use these few examples Gang colours being worn in pubs especially in Canada Women only gymnasiums Membership requirements of certain Credit Unions and Royal Canadian Legions NEXUS membership Visiting football supporters banned from pubs Dress codes for certain establishments Can we argue that some of the above are discriminative? |

all of that & more endless & within the law - in fact, being run of the mill normal (whatever normal is these days) its likely a person can be discriminated against.

interesting situation Is this a case of political correctness gone mad? or do homosexuals automatically have the gawd-given right to be catered to even if the hotel owner thinks different? They were not asking to be catered to, they were simply asking to be treated the same as everyone else. If they had been black and the owners had refused them would you think they were asking to be catered to? |
Re: gays not welcomed
Oh goody, another moral indignation thread!

Re: gays not welcomed
The owners are still free to refuse anyone they like a room on a personal level, but once it is a business it is in the public domain and changes. They are still not being forced to accommodate gay friends or even have gay friends. There seemed to be a view that their personal beliefs are being infringed, Its a business, it stops being personal issue and becomes a public one.

Re: gays not welcomed
Somewhat in the thoughts of the recent thread on the 50's I remember seeing lots of signs as a kid saying "Room to Let - no Blacks, Irish or Dog's". Thank Christ (or any other deity of choice) we've moved on from there. That being said if you have a Hotel, you have to put up with the great unwashed unpleasant public in whatever form they come barreling through your door. If You have a B&B you can be a bit more discerning, if it's your home.
I know loads of B&B's that might not state 'you need to be Gay, Naturist or into group sex in order to stay here' but intimate it in their advertising...and NO, I've never personally stayed in 'em. A girlfriend of mine's mum ran a B&B in London, but would only allow retired policemen and their families to stay, she was a widow, it was her house and she was full. |

years back I was thinking along the same lines to rent our basement to 'flight crew' personnel only figuring they'd be gone most of the time |
Re: gays not welcomed
Its a difficult theme aint it, and I admit my limitations and confusion on this,
I am what people say straight...have gay friends, over the years defended Their corner, worked in a part gay pub. That was many years ago. Couldnt go down that avenue myself. Hotel is opens its door to trade with the public, by law they cant pick and choose, but Yes I still have my qualms..for instance I couldwatch a man and women kiss In public, and pubs, walk by two gays kissing in the park, no thought, Be in a hotel lounge relaxing with family, No I still wouldnt like to see 2 gays Kiss and cuddle...2 gay politicians |
