Oh come on I've taken a large enough sample of mediocre to dreadful restaurants here that are packed by Canadians. It’s the Corner Gas syndrome I believe. They've all grown with such shit restaurants in their little towns that when they bugger off to Toronto or Vancouver they want something familiar.
Vancouver is big on many non-small-town cuisines, take Sushi for example. It was also voted a few years ago as having the best Chinese food in the world, which was said to be due to the excellent produce from all the local farms around here. |

As for dreadful, consider the Canadian staple of Swiss Chalet.... |

Personally I wonder if people are in the same city.......Curries aside, Vancouver has way more selection and quality eateries than just about anywhere in the UK, with the exception of London. |

I agree. There are way more good restaurants than bad here, way more. England, at least in the north is mediocre to the point of tedium. Everytown is the same: bunch of Indians, couple of chinese, a kebab shop, pie shop, chippies and perhaps an Italian and maybe something exotic like a Viet or a Thai place. Then of course there is the pub with the same collection of cavery or chicken in a basket....

Re: curry withdrawal advice-(Vancouver)
I have a curry question one of you withdrawees may be able to answer. We eat loads of Indian food, purchased, and usually eaten, in Little India or Brampton. Sometimes it's convenient to take the food home even though this means reheating it. Curry survives reheating well, most Indian dishes do, but not nan, it's rubbish within five miles of the restaurant. Is there a means by which the inhabitants of Vancouver or Winnipeg or anywhere else in the void west of Detroit are able to take nan home from Toronto or Montreal or Dallas or wherever the nearest restaurant may be and maintain it in an edible state?

The UK has a large number of genuinely world class restaurants - Ramsay on RHR, the Fat Duck, Hibiscus, L'enclume etc. Canada has nowhere that comes close to these.
As for dreadful, consider the Canadian staple of Swiss Chalet.... |

Re: curry withdrawal advice-(Vancouver)
The common opinion that sushi/sashimi is great in Vancouver I think is misguided. The problem is that because there are so many restaurants it drives down the price but subsequently drives down quality. There are a lot of sushi places here, but only one or two good ones.

I don't disagree these kind of places exist, same as they do here. There is endless pub food just like Weatherspoons, though you will pay more for it and your beer. At least at Wetherspoons the crap food is cheap as is the beer. However, like here, and possibly more so, there are some great restaurants. You suggested that all everything in the north was mediocre, which is simply not true.
To hold out the north as some gastro Utopia on the basis that there may well be some diamonds amongst the rough is just plain silly..... |
