But they don't sell Balti pies.

For any Vancouverites prepared to risk the lands south of the Fraser, 120th Street = Scott Road.

I was in teh UK this spring and most cities in the UK I was at have a very unimpressive range of places to eat, beyond scores of Indians, chinese take aways kebabs, endless pubs serving much the same fare and something exotic for colour, such as an Italian or a Mexican there's not much else.

So, British, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Mexican (I am relatively confident that there would be the usual North American fast food joints) what more do you want - Norwegian fare for vegetarian celiacs?:p

Was not meant to be an exhaustive expose. Point being that when compared to similar sized cities, Vancouver has much greater variety that those in the UK. Endless curry houses and pubs are the British staples. Vancouver has an impressive foodie scene for a small city. it might not be Paris or Milan but for a small provincal city in the middle of nowhere, pretty good. Even the street food scene is starting to evolve here:

There are 60 more licences set to be issued by spring.

Grounds for Appeal (cafe in the Law Society) - do great value for money lunchtime curries (Cambie St. between Robson and Smithe)

Rasoee Indian Kitchen - Good value for money curries and wraps for lunch/dinner to/stay go (Robson St. between Hamilton and Homer).

Equally good for veggies and carnivores.

Enjoy :)

I can highly recommend the Tomahawk Restaurant in North Vancouver. I had their Yukon breakfast this morning to help after a bit of a session last night and it was great.

If I may digress, (the reference to Yukon Breakfast set me off), there used to be a place on Granville called Don's something or other, Seafood palace, or Hideaway, really can't remember, and I had a Hang Town Fry, which the menu described as a popular breakfast in Dawson City in the gold rush days, and which commanded a price of $80 or $100 back then, and it was an omlette containing bacon and oysters... can't remember if it had cheese or not, doesn't matter; i[ isn't an exact science. I re-created it a couple of times..... it's pretty tasty - the place was Don's Seafood Palace, and the next time I went to Van it wasn't there anymore. So, there might be an omlette (omellete?) in france or portugal that is really close but wouldn't you call the breakfast you have when you strike it rich in the Yukon 'Canadian Cuisine'? Aside from the Newfie fish and brewis and jigs dinner and Quebec tortierres, (which did for the passenger pigeons!) and the all pervasive hot beef sandwich there's nothing you can name, oops (curse you, maple syrup!), that we share as cuisine from coast to coast. Or not.

Exactly, there's a big thing in Vancouver about "authentic" spring rolls, and how people make fun if you have a westernised spring roll... it's like, who cares, if it tastes good does it's origin matter?

It's like refusing to eat spaghetti because they're unauthentic noodles.

It's out on highway & between Marmora and Havelock. It's not better and the state of the buildings make you question the hygiene.

Shafiqs and Curry Village are not consistent and some of their dishes are just awful. I do like the salmon tandoori very much though.
