Shafiqs and Curry Village are not consistent and some of their dishes are just awful. I do like the salmon tandoori very much though. My hubby always (never tried something else) get the Lamb vindaloo and I most of the time go for the Lamb Dupaiza or Lamb Dhansak, haven't tried the other dishes, oh I have tried the salmon tandoori, that is also nice. In August we went to a nice curry place in Taunton, Somerset, that was the best ever. |
Re: curry withdrawal advice-(Vancouver)
i'd say you just need to cook your own. there's a much bigger indian population in the UK than in vancouver. the curry mile in manchester is a great example :) anglo indian curry is a sort of sub genre of regular curry and mainly consists of kormas and tikka massala (which was invented in glasgow i think...)
first time i was over there i had a curry and it had many of the right elements but just wasn't great. when i get out there i'll learn to cook (it's a miracle i've made it to my mid 30's with my lack of culinary skills!) if you get good at mixing up a mean curry start your own restaurant :D i reckon you'll have plenty of expat customers who miss the warm embrace of rogan josh or a bhuna on a cold winters evening. |

Curried Meatloaf
Beat a couple of eggs into some ground beef, add bread crumbs and knead. Mix curry powder into campbells cream of mushroom soup (thin it with a little milk) and pour over the ground beef in a dish. Bung in the oven on about 400 for about 50-60 minutes. Not quite a curry but it's gorgeous. |
Re: curry withdrawal advice-(Vancouver)
I had a really good Indian Curry when I working at the Airport in Vancouver.
I was staying in the Holiday Inn on Cambie Road (off the 99). Just down the road on the junction with No 5 Road is a little shopping area (with Shoppers Drug Mart on the corner). Quite close to Drug Mart within its parking are is a great little Indian Restaurant, decent curries and nan's. So the corner of Cambie/No.5 Road. Not read all the replies so this maybe a confirmation of someone elses. EDIT: This one http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&...-8&sa=N&tab=wl oops that didn't work as a link, name is better perhaps Tandoori Kona Restaurant http://assets.urbanspoon.com/w/s/Om/...hw0G6-640m.jpg |

Re: curry withdrawal advice-(Vancouver)
There is an Indian restaurant across from where I work in Victoria.
It sells tikka masala and its not bad at all. I think its a little overpriced but if its just for a special treat then what the hell! It is Amrikko's, and is at 298 Old Island highway (intersection with Helmcken, near the construction) Tel 250 744 3330 |

Yes I agree. How about, "The Curry Secret: Indian Restaurant Cookery at Home." by Kris Dhillon. Which I believe you can find a PDF version.
they do give reasonable results but they can be drastically improved upon. Mick |

Sorry if I got this wrong but I thought 'The melting base Recipes' could be viewed without paying and there is a large video section at the bottom of the forums page that could be viewed.

I liked your video for CTM. Not the way I do mine, but I see where you're coming from. And welcome to the forum by the way.
The British Indian Restaurant CTM is a very simple dish, there are other ways of doing it but they are all a variation on a theme, Of the 6 or 7 kitchens that I have been into over the years they have all done it this way, with the use of Pataks pastes, or nowadays other makes of tikka, tandoori, kashmiri masala pastes, I know a lot of people think this is some kind of cheating but its what the average high street BIR does.
