To hold out the north as some gastro Utopia on the basis that there may well be some diamonds amongst the rough is just plain silly.....

I didn't hold it up as some kind of gastro utopia, but was trying to suggest that to generalise on the basis of crap chain restaurants is unfair, same as it would be in Canada - and that there are some stunningly good restaurants in the north.

Anything world class?

West.....

No one is suggesting that Vancouver has a massive number of world class restaurants, but when stacked up against similar sized cities in the UK, iit wins hands down with it's choice and range of restaurants......(other than rubbys of course)

As opposed to generalizing on the basis of some mitchelin star restaurants? Hardly the mark of the place. There are some stunningly good restaurants here too:)

Well...I found eating Sea Cucumbers Filled with Calyx Roe - Sea Lettuce and Salicornia quite challenging....does this count?

Did you find West stunningly good? I thought it was ok for a nice meal, but not special. I would struggle to recall what I ate there.

Ah, I have some experience in trying to keep such delicacies down, but I couldn't tell you if the Sea Lettuce was farmed or free range. I've not the tongue for that.

Dunno, aren't there around 150 restaurants with at least one star in the UK? Although I don't think it is an absolute measure I still find it a fairly reliable guide to good food. The Bib Gourmand is helpful too, you find some good pubs etc making it into this list.

There are some very good restaurants in Vancouver, as you mentioned West, but there's Cru, Le Crocodile, Blue Water Café, Tojo's. The problem is North Americans typically eat out as if they're filling up at a petrol station. Its not usually about the special experience so its not quality they desire, its to be filled up. World class? Many have world class views, but third class food. For instance, the Watermark or Boathouse on Kitts beach. Brilliant view, mediocre food.

I used to quite like Rain City Grill, it had the view and ok food. Never less than decent, never amazing. Heard good things about Le Crocodile but never tried it.

The problem with the rain city grill (and a lot of places in Van like it) isn't that isn't any good (as it is quite good), it's that it's just not as good as it thinks it is.

Good old fashioned poncy "fine dining" in Vancouver is hard to find I think. Don't know about manchester, but there was more of it in Leeds. La Gavroche is decent though; it's a bit pricey, but they do a great steak tartare.

I agree.

well i can only say that I must have very bland taste buds. True that Vancouver has more casual, trendy dining than the finer variety. If one cares for white linen and silver service...

But for a small city, i still hold my own that the choice and selection of eateries here is very good and quite frankly i am astonished that anyone would say otherwise.

I went when it first opened after it had some rave reviews and recoginition on the the international stage. To be honest it was so long ago I can't really remember.

I tend to avoid the fancier, over-priced places these days.

There has been a number of casual bisto type places open around gas town that are worth a gander. In fact, if you have not been here in a few years, I think you would be impessed with the turn-around of the area.

Check out, meat and bread, teh diamond, pekinpha, five acres, salt, pour house, etc....

Aren't you making an assumption that a restaurant has to serve western food to be "world class?"

As I have said before, some of the Chinese restaurants in Vancouver/Richmond are considered amongst the best in the world. Zen Fine Chinese Cuisine or Sun Sui Wah for example.
