No problem! I have a very odd tablet and I thought it might just be me - I often get odd Portuguese looking characters pop into the middle of posts...which other posters don’t see :o

76 in hospital, 20 of those in ICU

I like this quote from Dr. Henry "-"The future is in our hands and we must continue to wash them.""

As restrictions are lifted, Dr. Henry still asks people to stay home as much as possible, be cautious when going out, continue physical distancing and avoid non-essential travel.

The economy is ugly, as I has suspected last Month say unemployment rise into double digits.

11.5% unemployment in BC and that doesn't include people like me who lost a job due to COVID before we could start said job or those who were unemployed already.

264,100 jobs lost in April, on top of the 130,000 lost in March, from April 2019 to April 2020, 420,000 jobs lost.

Canada as a whole is at 13% unemployment which is 2nd highest on record apparently.

Metro Vancouver which is BC's economic driver, lost 101,000 jobs.

Looks like Montreal was hit hard, 18% unemployment.

Hopefully a lot of the unemployment figures are temporary as a lot are temporary layoffs.....well were supposed to be, but the longer this virus drags on, many will become permanent....I guess a lot of the service industry will.... pubs and restaurants etc.... I dont see how they can operate at half capacity. Terrible for the owners of those places, they stand to lose a lot. Sadly I think it will be years before that industry recovers from this.

I am sure it will drop some in the coming months, hard to say right now how many jobs will come back and how quickly.

Apparently 47% of the lost jobs in BC were in retail and food service.

Yes, I did see it. I haven't heard anything from the IRS, but maybe a check will pop up in the mail, they have my address and returns, well they should anyhow, I sent them in...ha ha

Suppose all I can do is wait and see, their online info doesn't show anything.

Army & Navy is closing their doors after 101 years, doesn't look like they had the cash to get through this.

I didn't go to their stores often, but they were a good place to get workbooks and other work gear at good prices, sometimes 50%+ cheaper than Marks.

Oh no! That's a cultural icon gone on a par with any in Vancouver. I have vivid memories of shopping there, along with Save-On Meats and others. Nothing stays the same; now I think I know what Grandpa Simpson is yelling at.
When I was 18 I worked at Army and Navy in Regina in the men's ware dept for a couple of months.

The future is Wal-Mart, Costco, Canadian Tire, Amazon, Home Depot kind of world, nothing but box stores in our future, the small unique retailers just can't compete in today's world.

Opinion piece from an economist, but he is likely correct, the real unemployment is higher than the official rate because of how the official rate is defined. Could be closer to 30%.
