Ah yes, that was always something to look forward to. Double issue as well.
Here it is called Jiggs Dinner and is accompanied by cabbage, turnip and carrot boiled for many hours with salt beef until it is salty mush. I'm not a fan...

I miss the diversity of 'foreign' foody bits that I don't get here. Those lovely jars of lotus flowers in syrup that you can pop in the bottom of white wine, those amazing smoked fishy things, that are great for canapes, the IKEA fish pastes (not enough population here for an IKEA). I miss Lakeland and all the special little gifts they do. I want to be able to eat 'strange' foods that I've never had before, because that's what I do at Christmas. I want more than "Duck Pate" and I want to buy Brik pastry, not filo..... I should have moved somewhere with a bigger populace...my bad!

Well yes, it's the cross we all bear for not living within spitting distance of the St Lawrence market or similar. I get a similar feeling when reading a cookbook - from Delia to Jamie - suggesting one should use free range chicken & locally reared pork etc etc. I still make the recipes but the chicken comes from Canadas largest battery hen farm which is just up the road and pork from god knows where. In the boonies local, high quality food and produce is something you learn to live without.

I bought the plum pudding from Loblaws to try, it was "on sale" for $9.99. It had better be good!

Why do people call it "plum pudding" when there's never any naffing plums in it?

Every year I go to a local Christmas craft fair where an English lady sells excellent traditional Christmas pudding (with rum and stout) and chocolate rum fruitcake. I hand over my cash and joyfully head home with my goodies. Job done

These sound great, the sort of thing my Mum would enjoy while she is here. I've never heard of this before. I've found hibiscus flowers online, which I'm hoping will be similar. Ordinary white wine or sparkling?

From wiki
Despite the name "plum pudding," the pudding contains no actual plums due to the pre-Victorian use of the word "plums" as a term for raisins.
From a recipe
"This is a fairly basic British Christmas plum pudding recipe but unlike other recipes it can actually have plums in it."
So they don't have plums unless they do.

They actually used to do a nice scotch egg at the British pub in the Epcot Center in Disney World.
