Christmas Cake & other goodies

Just look at what's routinely available in the UK and compare that to what's here.

You're lucky to get a small cube of fruitcake that doesn't even look like a xmas cake. Or there is one of those 'ring' things.

That's about it for routinely available.

Anyone would think Canada doesn't celebrate Christmas.

(no prizes for asking why you don't make your own)

Has anybody not understood the idea that Canada is really a bit of a backward shithole? One mitigates rather than celebrates life here.

It's really sad the lack of exciting Christmassy things to buy in the supermarket :(

I have a super exciting box coming from the British Corner shop online :) I figured it was worth the shipping and inflated prices to have a few goodies from home.

BUT Christmas Cake wasn't amongst the items we ordered. I make my own Bristol :p

I've done that almost every xmas - more likely from a bit of home - but I'm not bothering this year.

I might succumb to some Whisky marmalade though...if I can remember where it came from last time.

I think will do.

I just looked on their website - I expect to be paying inflated prices OR shipping, but not both! They're more expensive than both our local British shop and the small Walmart selection PLUS 30 quid shipping, PLUS duties etc.? Blimey!

And Oink, I think that might have to be the best line of the week - thanks for the smile :)

Our Christmas food shopping generally consists of a splurge at the local Brit store, and whatever random stuff the kids get sent that we can steal ;)

I dont think Canadians are like the Brits when it comes to celebrating Christmas. I admit that the selection of goodies are somewhat limited compared to the UK but is it a cultural thing for Canadians not to be sat in front of the TV on Christmas day waiting for Lizzies speech and stuffing themselves. They havent quite caught onto the concept of selection boxes or stockings filled with chocolate bars, proper xmas puddings and sauces.
How many Canadians have a traditional Sunday lunch of roast whatever with all the trimmings.
Yes Canadians are Meh when it comes to Christmas. Do they even do Carol singing? Ah the days of going round to all your mates singing a carol then DEMANDING a shot or rum, whiskey etc and at the 7th house forgetting the carol and just needing another drink.
Even the office parties are not as raunchy as a typical UK one as most leave by 7pm and have to stop in at WalMart or Crappy Tire on their way home.

We clearly live in different Canada's. Supermarkets here are wall to wall Christmas goodies, chocolate etc & Christmas boozing is very definately a thing. Perhaps in the Prairies it's because one daren't step outside at Christmas lest you freeze sold in the icy blast?

I head to London tonight for a week or so. On my return I'll be bringing (and declaring naturally) my $20 of cheese & some decent chocolate. Probably a Christmas pud as well.

I was dragged off to a Christmas party by HID last year and it was one the most dull affairs I've ever been too. Horrible dull people eating horribly dull food, no dancing to rubbish Christmas songs. So I spent the evening stood by a couple of the best bottles of claret I could find growling at anyone who came even close to them. After which I believe I rearranged the host's 30+ disturbing looking nutcrackers (who I mistook for Diddy Men) into comprising positions at which point HID decided it might be better that we left. I did manage a partial snog with the host as we were leaving.

Well, there are plum puddings which are much the same thing. Mince pies too.

Isn't it just called pot roast?

Ah yes, that was always something to look forward to. Double issue as well.
