Yeah, on here we've just said as long as it's reported by a major news network.

But I am pretty sure that Gord Downie will be reported on BBC, The Tragically Hip is not exactly a small indie band, yes they're Canadian but they're huge in the US as well. So I would put money on the fact that BBC will have it.

Not at the moment, but they did have his farewell concert from November

"Is there a Canadian version of BBC? CBC? Might that be acceptable?"

wonders a competitor. The moderator is having none of it:

"No, otherwise this will devolve into an argument about how x was super-famous in Tajikistan, and the death was reported on their state broadcaster."

Heh!

The news on CBC is risible (Radio Canada - the franco arm - of CBC is much better).

This may not be a popular opinion but if it wasn't for Can Con regulations do you honestly think that the Tragically Hip would be as popular as they are? I remain to this day underwhelmed by them. I realize it isn't a popular opinion but to me they are the Eagles of Canada....everytime I hear Hotel California/Long Run/Take it Easy I reach for the mute button.

Their US popularity is over reported I think. Highest album chart peak is #129 on US charts and not one Billboard Hot 100 single.

I never liked Tragically Hip, don't like any of that moaney-whiney music, not REM (a few songs I like), not most of them. Don't like Rush either, but after working in a live music venue for a long time I understand that peoples' tastes vary. After beating the trail from bar to bar across Canada and the US most bands or individual artists don't achieve enough success to sustain themselves, but some of those that keep going back for years break through eventually.

I can't stand Gord Downie's singing voice. Not a popular view in my house as the Mrs is a fan.

I assumed they were big in the US because they were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, if I'm not mistaken. But maybe I had just overstated their actual popularity. In any case I think they would likely be reported, given how much coverage in the international press his original diagnoses and the subsequent farewell tour received.

Herr Kohl. I used always think he was fat old German; now he's simply German (and a venerable one at that).
