"The temptation will be to say this was a small group of people causing trouble, and that it had nothing to do with hockey. Well, yes and no. First, it wasn't a small group. We're talking hundreds, probably thousands, of citizens involved in the ugliness that erupted even as Gary Bettman was handing the Stanley Cup to Bruins captain Zdeno Chara. Having been around other sport "riots," I can tell you this was a whole other level."" "But more important will be what this, the riots and the ugliness, says not just about Vancouver, but about the Canucks' place in it. You can hardly blame the hockey team for what happened, yet at the same time its the Canucks who seem to be the match that lights the civic lawlessness in this city. There's a strange mentality here that the NHL is out to get the Canucks, to deny them their rightful victories, and it's propagated by some very prominent media voices. There's always booing when Bettman tries to present the Cup, but it was deafening at Rogers Arena last night, an apparent expression of a belief that the NHL screwed the Canucks, that suspending defenceman Aaron Rome, for example, was unfair and unjust and part of some grand conspiracy." "Idiots and criminals created last night's ugliness. But hockey and this town's hockey atmosphere were part of it as well. You cannot pretend otherwise." On another note, despite the crap weather all seems to be calm on the first day of the Third Test  http://live.theprovince.com/Event/Pr..._Cup_Playoffs2 |

It's on the BBC. The VPD screwed up here. There just weren't enough of them - I was watching this on TV yesterday and there was like a dozen coppers trying to hold back thousands of people. Reinforcements were only called well after the riots had started. I thought they said they knew what to do after 94. |

Iced Hockey? Isn't it Ice Hockey? Surely Iced Hockey is some kind of cake?
It's made the Oz news and congratulations, it makes the local pond-life look like intellectuals :D |
Re: Canucks lost - vancouver riots!
Just seen it on BBC 1, they seem to suggest it was because the result was a 'trouncing' so would everything have been fine had they only lost 1-0? They never actually mentioned the result, which was anybody?

There have been some comments made that this may have happened even if Vancouver had won. |

The authorities need to make examples of some of the core dickheads and scare the crap out of the canuck shirt wearing sheep. But the crap last night had lots of inevitability about it. So much so that we stayed away. |

There have been some comments made that this may have happened even if Vancouver had won. Very likely. I'm trying to put myself in their shoes; being is a frenzied crowd, under the influence of alcohol, knowing that an event like this occurred before and knowing people are likely anticipating a repeat of it, seeing others flip a cop car, being young and wild/stupid, living in a city where the cops have a bad reputation due to previous events... If I was 20 years younger and there, I would have probably been right in on some of it... no matter the outcome of the game. Yeah, it's senseless and stupid... but it was probably a hell of a lot of fun and a great release for most of them involved. Obviously, not for the people injured, the property and businesses and the horsies but I suspect the majority of "the idiots" are probably otherwise decent people. |
Re: Canucks lost - vancouver riots!
At the very least it's actually something newsworthy going on here. I woke up to a few sms's/emails from people in the UK asking if I'm ok!!!

If you need a release, have a wank. |

Sorry but people who think it's fun to injure people, damage and burn cars, smash up businesses, steal, and cause such mayhem are NOT decent people.
If you need a release, have a wank. Edit: Just realised "wank" would never be used in Canada, my apologies, please carry on |

I'm saying that people can get caught up in 'the madness of crowds' and do things that they otherwise wouldn't do. Adding... I'm not saying that this makes this behaviour OK. I'm saying I can see why it happened/happens and why that's not related to the final score of a hockey game. |
Re: Canucks lost - vancouver riots!
For those of you on Facebook, take a look at the "Vancouver Riot Pics: Post Your Photos." page that has been set up. Specifcally the pictures and the screen captures from people's facebook and twitter accounts. (As per the link I posted upthread). "look at me, I'm rioting and looting. What a badass gangsta I am" seems to be a common theme. THis isn't youthful exuberance. It's criminal activity, stupidty, a disregard for others and general being a tosser. The only funny thing is people who are stupid enough to post what they've done on FB and have their privacy settings set so that all can see.
Oh yes, and Peas knows what 'Wank' is. She lived in Essex for a while after all.;) |
