So its not just dopey Canadians but it looks like it kicked off with dopey posh people at Ascot. I suspect alcohol was involved in both instances.

I simply can't imagine boozed up people causing trouble in the land of hope and glory.

The two are not comparable. Rome's hit was like a football defender making a late tackle. A foul, sometimes a sending off, and sometimes causing unintended injury.
Keane's was a premeditated and deliberate attempt to end a fellow professional's career.
Keane's out of control temper would rule him out from ever being a hockey player, however skillful he was.

Keane didn't loose his temper at all when he took out Haarland. It was planned ever since Haarland had injured Keane previously.

Well in my 35 years of going to matches in the UK I can't ever recall anyone being killed in the UK as a result of football violence (though I'm open to being proved wrong).
The only significant deaths I'm aware of are from the Hillsborough tragedy and the Bradford disaster....both non-violence related.
And I think you'll find that if you were to do a google search on the subject of football(soccer) violence, you would find that it is not something that is particular to English fans....but in fact happens the world over.
My point was that in comparison to fans of many other countries, some of which I mentioned in my previous post, the English are by no means the worst offenders of football violence.

Fights and GBH are often premeditated in the NHL, sometimes with sanction from the coach.
I believe, also, that the refs decide before a game how lenient or not they are going to be. That's why in some games you see blatant muggings go unpunished.

Yes. Bertuzzi (Player) is sueing Marc Crawford (Coach) who apparently encouraged him to take out Steve Moore (Player).

From a cost benefit analysis perspective, who were the winners and losers of the Vancouver riots?
Win
Glaziers
City workers (overtime)
Police (overtime + public sympathy/more funding)
Companies specializing in counter riot equipment (teargas, bean bag guns, pepper spray etc)
Justice system
Lawyers and support staff (defending those that got caught)
Agencies that provide court mandated counseling courses
Vancouver residents (warming sense of superiority and self righteousness)
Non-Vancouver residents (overwhelming sense of superiority and self righteousness)
Office supply shops + Hallmark (post it notes and cards etc for messages of support)
Media; Print, television, radio
Facebook & Twitter
Mobile phones companies (increased airtime usage)
Insurance companies (Higher premiums that will more than offset losses)
Lose
Those who got caught and are prosecuted.

Hockey is a contact sport.....Football is a limited contact sport....The rules are different from those descriptions alone - before you even get to the finer rules of the individual sport. As football is a limited contact sport the penalties for contact is generally greater.
Also, can I say that 9 times out of 10 any fights that occur in hockey are done and dusted after the game.......It doesnt usually continue with the people involved after the game....I know that it does happen but generally in very minimal circumstances.

And......Players can be signed by a team purely on their enforcer 'skills' - less so on their actual playing skills. They can be sent onto the ice by the coach to pick a fight.
