CAN ANYBDY ON THIS FORUM SPELL?!

It jars when I see homophones used wrongly, for example; their, there, they're. The wrong choice can change the whole meaning of the sentence. Its a mistake often made by educated people, who get paid $$$. Even more annoying is that they don't take the time to educate themselves.

Full marks for spotting the own goal. I like to assume people are more tolerant than I am...
For the record. I am not well paid, and don't have a degree, though I am educated and so should know better. (Comma splice noted in that sentence)

I make more mistakes than George Bush and dont give a dam. I skipped school and ended up a dumb son of a bitch but I only have my self to blame. I get on with it and do my best
thats why some of us get spelling wrong but we do get better over the years and some like me take longer (self taught ya know)

Sorry Kate, but in the early days I was mostly totally mystified!

'Emagration', 'immagration': WTF?!
You would have thought that after agonising over that very issue for any number of months or years people would at least be able to spell it correctly!
How do these people get in?!
Rant over.
P.S Before any wise-guy mentions the spelling of 'anybody' in the title, my wireless keyboard is screwed!

Exactly Morwenna.
Just because something is spelt correctly, doesn't mean it makes sense.
BTW. Should I be using spelt or spelled? I say the former by my spell checker says the latter.

which means that there isn't an endless stream of text. I don't think of your posts as full of errors, more a joy to read, a breath of fresh air.Maybe you could teach us all Katespeak?

Current usage favours spelled. It's the same with while and whilst. Whilst is perfectly acceptable but regarded as old-fashioned. I use it.

Either is correct. "Spelled" seems to have greater currency in American usage (is quoted first in Webster) while "spelt" seems to have the edge in British usage. There are a few other verbs with the same issue: learnt/learned is a good example. Some have taken the -t ending as the participle and the -ed as the imperfect tense, though they're still interchangeable in some usages: the fire burned brightly; the sausages were burnt to a crisp.

Edit: I see if I had read down to the bottom of the thread I would have seen Oakvillian's excellent reply.
