I retire, ungracefully, from the field of battle.
Sore, bruised, bloodied but yes, unbroken.
Pride held high like a blazing beacon of hope,
bringing succour to the dark shadows of brutalism and cynicism.
O yea, will I return to these battlefields, with vigour renewed and strength restored,
Alas, until then, I must bid a sorrowful
Adieu.

Hell, it seems I missed a bit while I was out at lunch (although, to digress, that had its merits. An Empire Club lunch with Stephen Harper as the guest speaker. I was sitting next to a splendidly obnoxious Alberta ex-Reform Party Harperite, who simply couldn't grasp that I thought Harper's speech was so much empty air. I managed to get him to turn quite a pretty shade of puce in his apoplexy...). Before I left I tried to post the following, but my machine hung. I thought I'd try again anyway, even though friend Benjy has left the game early.
Oh dear, where to start?
I think you mean "my partner and me."
Isn't that rather the point of a university?
Again with the period outside the quote.
Ooh, vainglorious and arrogant? Isn't that a bit like being both small and not very big?
Yet your interlocutors include both engineers and chemists, without unnecessary initial capitals, who seem to be able to hold their own in discussion with you on your chosen specialist subject. It would appear your education has been rather narrow.
And yes, it is a pointless pedestal but at least we can spell it.
I couldn't care less about making 'friends' with fellow expats on a forum. I have taken and given useful advice over the last two years and I will continue to do so. I just wish more attention was paid to the quality of posts as it speaks volumes about the individual in question.
Erm... hoist by your own petard, perchance?
And I have a viable career in both Academic Publishing and Sales behind me at 27, in addition to my 2 degrees and the one I am studying for.
Oh, and my girlfriend has secured a good job within 4 weeks of getting here, in a city where it is 'very hard to get a decent job'.

Point of order Mr Oakvillian......
Isn't someone who uses the word 'perchance' in everyday conversation, running the risk of being considered just the tiniest bit vainglorious themselves?
This has been a great read. I'd like to point out to dbd that lingerie is available in St John's and that not all of it is flannel. Di5ney can sell you some but you'd be disappointed with the selection of toys at her store.

Edit: Shit. I've just opened (note six hour time difference) what should've been a decent Cotes du Rhone and it's effing corked.
