Are Canadians at least able to distinguish between English/Scottish/Welsh/N.Irish accents, and name them as such? Please tell me so, because if one more American says 'British accent', I'll do something I won't regret.
Hi everyone,
My husband (scots) and I (english) are always accused of being Australian, but we're not as we came from Britain. But we once met an American, who refused to believe we were anything but Australian????? and just wouldn't give it a rest. :curse: So I knew from his accent (Texan) and cowboy hat that this guy was American, so i said to him............"oh, so your Canadian then"!! That went down like a lead balloon and got his back up cos he angrily replied "IM FULL BLOODED AMERICAN"!!! he never spoke us after that..........yes!!!!!!

We can only thank our lucky stars that you didn't accuse him of sounding like a Yankee. This way you're still with us.

I know i am always picking up other accents easily, Yesterday my son had to bring a lot of his things here and needed someone to drive the van from London so one of his rugby friends came he is South African, but unlike our other friends who have been here a while his accent is really strong, the children said within 10 mins i have picked up the accent, thank goodness they are only here for 24 hrs

I am the only English person in a fairly large office; I wasn't introduced to the Scottish girl because they didn't realise we were from the same neck of the woods, so to speak...........no pun intended. The general lack of knowledge over here is frightening.

At at place I worked I overheard a conversation about me! An English man was asking a Canadian lady if she thought people would have trouble understanding me because I was Scottish....... it gets better...... the place was full of Asian, Indian, and Hungarians who did not have a good command of the English language!
