Pretty much right, but maybe not as much needed. Single minimum wage likely leaves a fair bit more money for other stuff after rent here than single minimum wage elsewhere. More than minimum wage and/or two minimum wagers would have more spare again.

The disability differences are a problem. But they can work in reverse too. For all the "backward" aspects of NB, there's a medical treatment my wife currently gets here that would cost us significantly more in the other provinces.

just took a look at MLS.CA for income properties in Moncton & looks like a 4 plex can be bought for less than $100k

live in one unit, rent out the other three - is it doable, or would you advise a duplex?

Depends how much time you want to spend. Income is likely to be a better return rate with more tenants but two sets of tenants are easier to manage than three or four.

But if you are good at DIY stuff and can fix things without reference to third parties it's much easier.

With the right property - perhaps side by side rather than up and down - living in one and renting the other should be a good second income and be no different to living in a semi.

A 4-plex for under $100k? Sounds not very good and might not attract the best tenants.

I'd need to make what I make now, plus another 2,000 a month or so, and that would be approx 25-26 per hour if I did the math right and of course assuming my health stuff doesn't flare up causing me to need time off.

Too many other variables in play that would not permit an improvement in life, but if those variables were not there, and we both just worked normal 40 hour weeks, making 16/hr, it appears we would be better off, but those variables take it off the table.

I couldn't shovel snow the old fashioned way, I am a 35 year old with a 20 year old brain, and a 65 year old body. I can barely now even wash the car without being in pain. I got stuck with all the bad genes in the family, my sister got the good ones...

Need to consider the long term: gaining equity instead of a lifetime of rent. 35 is not as old as you seem to think it is. Just ask not2old. :) Duplex idea is a good one. There must be a way with disability/welfare payments, just need to think out of the box.

I've always said that it can help with other things. It can allow you to work part time or to add to a pension.

Or even to do that work you like rather than the better paid work that you don't actually like.

Yes?
Ah, well, I'll have some of that.
Oh, I thought you were talking to me, sir. Mr Wensleydale, that's my name.

Cheers.

Buses are back on the road. Remarkable for what the place looked like Sunday night. A ton of snow was taken away prior to this weekend but despite that, the streets have never been so narrow.

Yesterday we had a tractor/loader thing on our drive pushing and then lifting snow onto an already piled high snowbank. Then today our usual Mr Plow turned up and completed the job.

Thought as much.

We've - so far - got off very lightly as far as snowfall goes this winter. We're expecting to get seriously dumped on at Easter.

It's been extra-effing-freezing instead.
