Yes, you are right; cheaper places are those that everyone wants in towns where there are lots of high paying jobs.

Get real will you. If the price of land is low it necessarily means that it is either undesirable and/or requires a large sum to fix up. That's how the real estate market works when the government isn't interfering with it.

Out of interest, comparison and thread drift why don't we post a listing for a 3 bed 1 bathroom house in the/our city in a reasonable but not fancy area- just to see?

I'm off to search Peterborough listings

I quoted part of your post as a launching pad for my comments which were about the dismissal of places that weren't big cities.

I have no difficulty in grasping the concept of cheaper property leading from less demand. But there's a difference in property being cheaper in East Vancouver - was it? - compared to other parts of Vancouver as opposed to property being cheaper in Atlantic Canada which is more due to traditional reasons rather than shitshack like conditions or no amenities.

I got picked up on saying Moncton wasn't that far away from offering all the benefits of city living of the other cities.

That's not just about city vibes or art galleries and trendy wine bars.

The benefits of city living start with things like access to Doctor, clinic, hospital, school (without a long journey or going out of town), shopping, local work opps or a short commute, airport, train station, other good transport links, university, public transport, garbage clearance, snow clearance, mains water, leisure facilities, parks, trails, varied employment opportunities, speedy repairs in power outtages, nearby fire halls, short waits for emergency services etc etc.

That's over 20 things that Moncton has at least as as good as the biggest cities before the bonus benefits like Concert facilities, opera, sports teams, museums etc come into play.

If Vancouver and Toronto have twenty 'essentials' plus ten bonuses and Moncton has twenty plus five, well I don't condier that too far behind.

Spending large amounts on a shitshack just to live in Vancouver (and maybe not have much money left as a result) when a fraction will buy a very good property (not a fixer upper, not in the middle of nowhere - as someone said) in a city with most of the things Vancouver has and some money left to enjoy them sounds like madness.

Obviously if your employment chances are in Vancouver, then go there.

But these forums are full of people with opportunities in multiple places. There are also many people who found the big places didn't work out for them.

I discounted anything that says "As is". Apparently means won't pass a home inspection.

You're correct, of course, although I think the description was the middle of nowhere in a fixer upper which is a bit different to away from the city and amenities.

And now some general comment::)

The point I was trying to make is that Moncton is a city albeit a very small one) and it has the amenities and it's still cheap.

Now contrast that with the places in Ontario that people comment on where most of the jobs revolve around a car factory or something that shuts down and the place dies. Those low house prices as a consequence would tell you it wouldn't be a good place to move to. Low prices in NB just tell you that Atlantic Canada is generally a cheap place for property. It's not cheap because all the jobs have suddenly disappeared or the transport links are crap.

The property prices are on the increase. Commercial investment is growing. That ought to say something about the economy. But increased property prices that began low are still going to be relatively low.

I think you lot are being a little harsh when criticizing Moncton's cultural landscape. The Magic Mountain Water Park is supposedly very good. You won't find one of them in your so-called fancy cities.
