Good luck to him, I hope he has the resolve to make something happen, but with partizan politics and gun possession an article of US faith Im not holding my breath.

I think fixing the US fiscal issues is probably an easier task, but he's ultimately fairly powerless on both fronts. He does seem a fundamentally decent bloke though and I hope he can make a difference.

My kids will be getting extra hugs. I cant imagine being a parent in Newtown tonight. I dont want to.
Totally with you on this..........Obama has a chance to change US History forever.. not sure he will be able to do it.....

What power apart from some persuasive ones from the so-called bully pulpit, does he have to change anything?

BTW I didnt initially bring up this to show how or how not important my job is. As highlighted in the RCMP report a lot (vast majority) of murders committed in Canada by handgun use are from those hanguns smuggled into Canada. There again in your world this is not a problem that needs to be dealt with either in the US or Canada.
Yes this shooting happened in the US far away from the border but whats the betting if this had occurred in Canada what chances do you think that the firearms involved would have been smuggled into Canada or would they have nipped over to the nearest farmhouse and nicked a couple of the farmers rifles/shotguns to carry out an act such as this.
You carry on reading over your financial reports and I will carry on doing my job.
Of course, you're right. The only reason this doesn't happen in Canada is because of the diligence of Canadian border guards such as yourself confiscating all those guns.

I'm not trying to wind him up. I'm trying to get him to stop talking about his job for once. Maybe you think it's ok to compare killing kids to smuggling booze, but I think it's kind of crass.

Show some leadership and call a national plebiscite on gun ownership in US or each state needs to be allowed to do so. Bypass the NRA and politicians if they haven't got the guts. Like the UK, introduce stringent background checks, storage, ban automatic weapons and handguns

Start off by Re-enacting the assault-weapons ban which expired in 2004. The NRA has so far refused to allow Congress to consider its renewal. Who are these people !!!!!!!!

The US already has lots of laws regarding gun ownership and in the past Obama has said that he thought they could do a better job on enforcing them.

I fear that a referendum would allow the enormously wealthy and powerful US gun lobby to buy a result by weight of advertising. There is after all far more money in selling and promoting the sale of guns than there is in not selling and promoting guns. Therein lies one of the problems...

I don't want to sound insensitive but US gun laws have naff all to do with Canadians or Brits. If they want to shoot each other thats their concern.

For a smart guy you seem to have missed the point that you dont know what you will find once you start to look on spec. All you can guarantee is that if you dont look you wont find anything.

Not sure myself how that fits into this thread, but please dont play the fool, its really not your style.
