I'm Canadian and will admit to having a hair disaster in the past, but in mentioning my displeasure, I personally wouldn't go as far as making a blanket statement and say only that my experience happened in Canada, rather than that particular city/town. I have read people's accounts here and have only recently made some tongue in cheek comments in response.
I can respect that venting is sometimes needed and I try to keep an open mind.... but must admit that sometimes the blanket comments I read here make me feel looked down on because I'm Canadian. My husband is from the UK and I have learned a lot about the country he grew up in through conversations on this forum. In my location of BC, orchards abound and I purchase fruit locally. If I had a problem with the quality of the products I find here in my city, I would say "I can't find the level of quality products I prefer here in Kelowna".... rather than not "in BC or Canada". When I was in Rugby, Warwickshire (for example) and couldn't find the products or the quality that I wanted for a meal I was making.... I didn't say I couldn't find any good products in England... (Britain, or UK for that matter). Some friends recently had a conversation about Heinz beans.... UK version as opposed to the N. American version. It was finally decided that neither were horrible, but it did depend what you grew up with and were accustomed to. Different strokes, for different folks! ;) I hope your hiccups in getting settled in the area of Canada you live will subside and that you can find a happy medium. All the best.... Oggy (prepares to get skewered by the masses!!) I feel the same way when i hear things being said about Australia aswell so you are definently not alone in your feelings and thoughts. Too often i hear of negative comments about Australia..when in actual fact it is the area or region that people are living in where there is the issue at hand. But then it turns into ALL of Australia is crap because of one or so experiences in one place. and also some people are never satisfied no matter what country..town or city they live in, which comes down to personal attitude! anyways...i wont' turn this into something that is bigger than what it already is. i for one..am very happy to be living in *your* country. you do live in a beautiful area of Canada......and yes you do have access to lovely fresh fruits and vegetables..i will miss those apple blossoms i loved to drive by....:) |

Re: another crap haircut
Steering back towards the subject of this thread...........:)
You know those cheap wigs that fool nobody? Well had I been on the minimum Canadian wage for BC I would have had to work for 6 hours to pay for the visit to the salon that resulted in my getting that particular look! My precision cut at my last salon in the UK would have taken 4 hours working at the UK minimum wage to pay for it (including a tip). I appreciate that my last visit was over a year ago but they never raise their prices by more than a pound or two annually. There is not a supply and demand issue here like with vegetables as there are dozens of hairstylists but just not many who are willing to update their skills. |

Exactly. Another reason my Korean hairdresser is way, way better than any I've gone to in the UK. But I don't judge the whole of the UK by the bad hairdo's I've had there.:)
i've decided you arent a pedant because you arent accurate enough. Nowhere in this thread have I judged all canadian hairdressers. I have said that I have had only bad haircuts "here" and said you have to go to Toronto for a decent cut. Isnt Toronto in Canada? |

Good for you. Again.

Why don't you concentrate on something positive about Canada for a change, and you'd likely feel better. When I first came here, the most gut-wrenching thing was the fact that I knew I would never see a familiar face when walking down the street. I didn't give a rat's-arse about haircuts, food, or whatever - all that part was an adventure in finding new stuff. And my Mum sent a care package of English chocolates every few months, so that kept me sweet! I had to look up "pedant" to be sure of what you meant in this context. (I'm an ignoramus!): "Pedant, or pædant, is a person who is overly concerned with formalism and precision, or who makes a show of learning. The corresponding (obsolete) female noun is pedantess.". Guess I'm a pedantess, then. I've done with learning! Come on - laugh. Life's too short. |

Go back and read your original post - you just said "here" several times, no mention of Toronto, and asked if you have to go back to England to get a decent haircut.
