But your arguement is still crap. Restaurant owner agrees to pay staff better. The price of food get's raised to cover the cost. Now we all have to pay more...... Except service is now non-existant and now there is no incentive for the service to be better. All the beutiful girls who used to serve me have been replaced by chubby unshaven people who don't give a crap. And suddenly it's like I'm back in the UK....... |

Re: Annoying
It is what it is, its accepted that service jobs in restaurants are not well paid and that tipping makes a difference.
You may not like that and may think that servers, bus boys, veg preppers etc etc should all be paid a living wage up front and not need tips, and you may or may not have a point, but the point is the business does not operate in that way, and you not tipping to make some point is not going to change anything, its just going to hurt the very people you would like to help by changing the way the pay system works... So dont be a cheapskate, pay a decent tip! Im one of the tightest men alive, and I tip. Truckers who may get $20+ an hour and bring home $50k+ a year or more are not really a valid comparison to minimum / low wage servers. |

To get that wage you quote they have to drive about 144000 miles a year be away from home for 80% of the year sleeping in a 6'x8'x6' box and work on average 75 hours a week, so a tip now and then would not hurt. So the in real terms a trucker gets less than a server, dont you think:blink:

Beats getting minimum wage and having to smile and be nice to arseholes in order to get the tips needed to make ends meet. Neither is for me though thank god.

That a daily occurance as a trucker at every delivery point, or with the DOT and cops. And the hourly rate for a trucker when all is added to gether is barley $15. No one holds a gun to a waiters head either, but they get the tips just for remembering what you want to eat and carrying it 10 paces.
There is more to doing front of house than remembering the order and carrying the food anyway, and you also need to consider that in most places the serving staff tips get divvied up with the back of house workers too. |

The difference is that those choosing to be servers know and accept that tipping is going to be part of the wage, its part of the decision making process in taking on that job. Just as truckers know they are not going to get tips. If truckers are only getting $15 an hour that's a bit shit really isnt it! (Montreal seems to be the place to be!) There are several truck driving schools around me and they all advertise the good wages available on the big trucks that drive ponderously around the industrial estate.

No that the link assumes they work only 36 hours a week, when in reality its 60 upwards, which halves their hourly rate.
Dont think anyone full time in canada only does 36 hrs a week do they? |
