It's been official for almost a year, but the idiots at VFS were enforcing it sporadically before that.

I`m off to the FRRO on Thursday to see if they will extend my`x` visa.
Its due to expire early October and I still haven`t found a new house to live in.Doesn`t give me long for getting sorted out and moved even if I do find somewhere soon.

Yes, good luck - it will be very interesting to see what they say. You may want to show them #14 at http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/ForeigD-PwrdlgtFRROs.pdf

i know this topic has been covered over and over but does anyone know what documents you need to take to uk as a property owner in order to get the 1 year X visa??

Please note that any foreign Nationals who own a property and have lived here in India for many years as residents can apply for a one year Entry visa if they have the following documents
1. You need RBI permission – Reserve Bank of India Permission
2. Local government permission to construct the property
3. Registration of the property with the Government of India
With all these papers you can apply for a one year entry visa extendable in India, with out the 2 month gap.

2) if you own recently built property the builder should have given you a copy of the NOC; for old Portuguese property they seem to accept a letter saying that.
3) If you have registered (pre 2007) then fine; if you have applied for registration then use a copy of the Registrar's receipt; otherwise try a [copy of a] Notarised copy of your deeds (good idea to include that anyway).
If you rent/lease then they seem to accept a copy of the lease and a printout of the FEMA FAQ about 5-year leases being OK for FN's.
ALSO they are currently asking for a sight of old passports (presumably as evidence of 'living in India for many years' - check out the MHA website for 'powers delegated to FRO's' which mentions this - maybe copy that as well). I told them (truthfully) that our old passports were in India but gave a summary of visits for the last few years and mentioned that we first visited India in 1973!!
Allow at least 15 working days to process your visa. GOOD LUCK.

P.S. went to register at the FRO in Panjim today - when they asked for a copy of the house deeds I told them they had more copies than I did - so they said hold on that and if we can find it in last year's file we'll use that - gave them last years file ref to help|

The Official version is:
1) Since RBI don't issue permission the nearest you can get is a letter from the RBI saying they don't give permissions but 'if you are resident as per FEMA then there is general permission .....' (this used to be pretty much a pro-forma - not sure if it still is but there are copies around).

It looks like a very close match to the scheme announced by Chidambaram. If it is the same I wonder how it got into the public domain.
As a system specification cum management summary it has the usual faults of assumption and over-simplification which tries to hide under the latest (in this case I suspect it's yesterdays latest) design methodology.
I could go on....and on....
So I'll just say it does at least identify the main problem:
infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure!
