"Requirements concerning stay of Foreigners in India

Foreigners are required to comply with the purpose for which a visa was initially applied, and also to abide by conditions, endorsed on the visa. If the visa is valid for more than 180 days, then every foreigner entering India or resident in India shall present in person or through an authorized representative to the satisfaction of the appropriate Registration Officer at the place of his stay within the specified period mentioned on visa except certain visa categories requiring registration within the specified time. Such registration shall be not necessary in the case of a foreigner entering India on a visa valid for a period of not more than one hundred and eighty days and who does not remain in India beyond the said period.

All those foreigners arriving on authority of Tourist Visa with maximum period of 6 months need not require to be registered and do not want their visa to be extended , need not require to be registered. Further ,generally speaking ,Tourist visa is not extendable.

Such Foreign nationals , who are already holding long term Tourist Visas for 10/5 years with stay stipulation of 180 days/90 days and with multiple entry facility, there should be gap of at least 2 months between tow visits to the country on Tourist Visa. In case requirement to visit the country within two months, permission should be sought from the Head of Mission concerned indicating the specific reasons for another visit within a short period. In all such cases registration would be required within 14 days of arrival."

Friends went back to the UK because of a home emergency, they are on a tourist visa, they have spoken to someone at the Indian High Commission in London and been told that they can apply in writing with their documents and copies of their flight tickets and they MAY be allowed to return within the two months. We are unable to get x visas now so most of us are on tourist visas with 180 days max per visit so this will affect most of us.

Has it been confirmed yet whether this applies to the 6 month tourist visa, or can we assume that they will apply it to every type of visa

Dread - whatever next !

Friends who went home for christmas have been told they cannot return until end February!!!!!!

The different readings of the visa's is as ambiguous as FEMA

So many local people are going to loose more business and this year is so quiet.

Does it mean although we have a six month tourist visa, we can stay for 6 months or do we have to leave in 90 days? We were going out of India this time as we have a multiple entry visa, but have been told if we do we cannot return for two months!!! Mad or what.

Will we get a six month visa next year and be able to stay for six months.

In to-days Herald:-

The immigration authorities in all immigration check posts in India have also been authorised to allow tourists to make two or three entries, as the case may be, based on production of an itinerary and documentation (ticket bookings) substantiating the need for tourism related travel.

The move to relax the guidelines came after the US and the UK voiced cooncerns over the tighening of norms resulting in a lot of problems for travellers.

As you know, i managed to grap another 5 year x visa, so these new stupid rules wont effect me as yet.
My Italian girlfriend, could only get a 90 day single entry tourist visa from Italy, last season, and shes told me its still the same.
Why cant India give a retirement visa as Thailand or Malaysia etc??.

A retirement visa would be good especially if it did away with the need to leave the country every 180 days and stay out for two months. Even if you needed to be able to prove that you can support yourself that should not be too difficult for most people as the British basic pension would enable you to live comfortably here.

In Thailand you need to put about 14,000 pounds with a reputable bank, a very simple medical, you then get a one year resident visa.
During that year, you can spend any amount of the 14,000 pounds as long as you have the same amount for the next visa.
Why couldnt India have simular???.

Because in India you would have to put this sum of money in

A reputable bank
a disreputable bank
a legitimate government bond
an illegitimate government bond (they are all b*stards anyway)
an MP's pocket
Kamats pocket
Pacheco's pocket
the Marmalatdar's pocket
the sarpanch's pocket
the registrar's pockets.............

and still you couldnt guarantee being able to stay beyond next Tuesday!

Yes its official....180 day max stay followed by a 2 month break before being allowed re-entry! Living in India on tourist visas not allowed. Apparently they don't want that kind of tourist.

This applies to tourist visas only according to the dnaindia article.

Regards,
Remy

PS. at least its 180 days and not 90 days which was first mentioned by them!!!!
as long as tourist visas are still stamped 180 days max stay and not reduced to 90 this shouldn't affect too many people!!!!

Might be useful also to watch the Foreign & Commonwealth Office site. The current information was updated on 24.12.2009 and marked still current as of today.

If you read the links, it seems this only relates to TOURIST visas.
