Confusing, isnt it?

Still, at least everyone is being reasonably nice to each other?

Re: Racism

Hi all,

I am sorry that I was not entirely clear in my post yesterday and that I posted on the wrong thread. What I wished to communicate is as follows;

1. That ex pats who use terms like Indians 'pond life' etc are racist. I really dont think that those comments should be torelated.

2. I wished to say that expats have every right to make complaints and raise issues about Goa and India.

3. It seems that some people on the web site, most but not all are of PIO status do not want anyone else on the site to be critical of India. The key point is that some of these people see criticism as synomenous with racism. Its not read point 4.

4. Everyone can and should be critical of the UK for any shortcomings. However, everyone regardless of origon should be critical of the gross inequalities in India. I really had wanted to raise the issue of inequality and probably was not clear.

I still must say that I can't really understand why people of Indian origon are so defensive about their country. I think as several people have said India/ Goa is racially biased. No argument there.

I do love my Goan friends and know they have enhanced my life. I cant say India/ Goa is wonderfull not because I am racist but becase I see how people live its not good, and PIO status people should at least ,as do many ex pats, work towards enabling the poor and repressed,.

Finally racism is wrong, I dont like the comments (very few) that are racist, still there is no racism in exposing the inequalities in India. I honestly want there to be constructive criticism of India , How can they grow with half the work force kept behind closed doors.

Hoping for a better future , r

Hi Ruskin,
I am a second generation PIO, half indian by blood but not by upbringing as my parents split when i was less than a year old. Im British born and bred and very proud to be British and served over ten years in the Royal Irish Regiment also very proud of that.

I don't class India as my Country (never have done) and i have been very critical of its short fallings in the past and will continue be so....but like you say hopefully in a constructive way.

Not all PIOs class India as their home in fact very few that i know actually do. You can be a claim PIO status going back four generations, i say this because there is a misconception that PIOs are Indians.

What i cant stand is the same spitting fire rhetoric that blights every thread, which goes down the line of spitting indians, excrement in the street (see latest thread) bla bla bla. Not because im defending India but more because its neither helpful nor constructive. How has any of this bitterness furthered the expat property cause, in fact one could argue that it has made things much worse. I said the same thing over a year ago and warned about visa repercussions and low and behold.

I will criticise India for sure but like you say .....in a constructive manner.

Thats how i feel, and don't really care about the impending backlash that usually comes from the same posters saying im talking rubbish.

Kind Regards,
Remy

Hi Ruskin

Good posts with some points I wholeheartedly agree with. There is a definite line between what is racism and what is someones' opinion based upon what they have seen and experienced, though that line is very thin at times.
Remy I also agree with the point you made - the spitting and urinating thing has been done to death but I am not convinced that this is the reason for the changes to visas. As for that new thread you refer to - it was pointless and unecessary and I am glad to see that Mitzy has sensibly closed it down ! It's one thing to post about what you have seen and experienced but the originator has started such an offensive thread based upon something he or she was apparently told !!

Dread - x

That is a racist, or to take the heat out of it, stereotypical comment if ever I heard one! Generalising people and assuming certain characteristics based on where someone originates from.

I'm not diasgreeing with you that SOME Goans stereotype 'Westerners' into a little box with 'money' 'idiot' and 'meal ticket stamped on it. But not all, and that is the point. To lump everyone of a certain - colour, place of origin etc into a box labeled 'racist' is to stoop to the same level you are accusing others of.

Total rubbish. Asylum seekers can, yes. But good, honest hardworking Indians? Forget it. My Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law came to England 5 years ago on HSMP (Highly Skilled Migrants Permits) - she is a Microbioligist and he an IT professional. It took them a year just to GET the initial entry visas, and when they got them, they were only valid for one year, and to be able to renew they BOTH had to be employed in jobs paying at least £30k per year. After ONE YEAR in the country. Give any British person the same challenge - find a job paying £30k in ONE YEAR and see what happens.

Added to that, immigrants (who do not have indifinite leave to remain in Britian - granted after 5 years residency) have to pay the SAME taxes as everyone else, but are NOT entitled to the same benefits - e.g. child tax credit, child benefit etc. In a way our Govt is sponging off these new highly skilled immigrants.

And, no, they were not entitled to a house. They bought one though in the last downturn 2008. It has not been easy for them, but they have now settled well in England, and we have taken their place in Goa!

Why are they not entitled to a house???, i know another Indian family, who live on benefits and get a house paid for, 850 pounds a month.
