Bagaboy, your sign on implies that you could well be a Goan living in London. Assuming you own something such as a car or property bought in good faith and within the law at the time of purchase, how do you think you would feel if the british government tried to make it illegal for you to own this car/property and to take it from you without paying you anything for it. Just had a pm from one of our old friends she has been told that our electrticity bill have gone up by 15% and the Herald is telling the Indians not to pay. I expect the Cowboys will have to.

Queried these higher prices and were told that we are on the same tariff as hotels.
What? we said, its only the two of us living in a private house.
Yes, they said, but you are foreigners renting it, so its the same as a hotel!
Oh!, and its a Goa Government(sic) instruction, too, they said.......

So, as the notorious PWD have a monopoly, we beat a tactful retreat to regroup.

Asked our landlord.
His solution? Well there isn't one because the PWD knows we are there as the meter reader has seen us.
Potential solution? Every time the meter reader arrives (un-announced), become very black and speak in perfect Konkanni, also best to convince your gossiping neighbours too.
Belly-ached to any Goon who would listen. All came up with strange solutions along with mutterings of "too much expensive". NO-ONE questioned the legality or morality of the matter, of course. Are they all just indoctrinated to expect the Government to rip everybody off, or more likely, do they just think it is right and proper that foreigners are shafted at every opportunity?
My solution?
Increase efforts to find somewhere civilised to live.

Have prices gone up 15% just for foreigners renting ( how about owners ?)
If its foreigners only this seems to be another derisive tact to get us out and is obviously racist

The electric bill should be due in any time, will let you know if mine has increased as the OH is living there alone at the moment he will definatley let me know if theres been an increase.

Hi martin-d - the Navtara has 2 vegetarian restaurants - one in Panjim and one just before you arrive in Mapusa and Mr and Mrs Idli is in Porvarim - Where will you be staying in Goa?
If you are staying in North Goa will be happy to direct you.
Last season there was a lovely vegetarian restaurant opened in Calangute - Anand Sagar - which we all thought was very good but our friend who lives in Calangute says that the floor has not been cleaned since the end of the tourist season and the whole restaurant is now quite dirty so will not recommend that one.
