Re: goa property scams

It appears that I have been a victim of Peter MarveyEstates and his associates. In 1997 my husband and I decided to buy a house off plan through David Stanley Redfern. We were handed over to Peter Marvey for him to deal with the buying of an apartment on a site called Seashells. We paid £1000 to David Stanley Redfern and then Peter Marvey asked for £13000 for a third deposit on the apartment. We kept being assured that everything was ok by Marvey. This was via email and telephone. In the summer I asked what was happening as I had expected to hear something prior to this. I was told that everything was going ok. My husband had been taken ill earlier in the year and was now really poorly. In September 2008 I was informed that the deal had fallen through. I have not heard from Marvey since. I have his email address and all his emails. Also those from David Stanley Redfern. The solicitor in Goa is Gajanan Korgaonkar and I have frequently been in touch with him. He keeps telling me that Peter marvey will get in touch with me but he has not. I have emailed Peter myself and had no response. The solicitor says he can't understand why Peter is not contacting me. Anyway my husband died in November 2008. So now I am alone in this. I have kept all the emails about this and have paper work. The solicitor says he is trying to get my money back to me. It is supposed to be in a bank in Goa. I may eventually have to go over there myself. But Seashells was never built. It sounds like it was a scam and I have heard that a lot of people lost their deposits on it. The solicitor says he never put the deposit on the apartment as he realised there was a problem. I don't expect to get the money back but there really does appear to be a problem somewhere and my personal feeling is that it is Peter Marvey.

Welcome to BE - what a sad story, I am sure Dread will give you some sound advice when she comes on line.

Did you pay your money in the UK?

Hi Cathy

Firstly welcome to BE. You have certainly come to the right place for advice on all things Goa property.

Is Peter Marvey based in the UK or Goa?
If he is in the UK then you have grounds to go to the police and register a case of obtaining by deception/fraud against him.

Please make 2 more posts on here. Once you have made three posts then you can use the private message service and I can give you further advice regarding your circumstances which may be better not done on open site.

I had Peter Marvey's email address but it is no longer valid as email is being returned to me. I have asked the solicitor in Goa to send me a new email address but not heard anything yet.

Cathy, you said in your first mail that you were arranging this purchase through David Stanley Redfern, DSR and that you paid the first £1000 to them, they seem to be still in business and have a Nottingham address and telephone number. Is this so in fact? If they are still there what are they doing for you? they must have some responsibility for the subsequent failings. What have they said?

Useless bit of information.....As a young person growing up in the U.K.1950s ie. England north of Manchester Milltown.Poeple would tell you not to trust this and that sort of person, because they know every trick in the BOOK........ I have lived in INDIA since 2001...REVELATION___I discovered that this BOOK was written in INDIA centuries ago......... I really do feel for this person who has suffered from these (Scams) so many i have encountered.
Corruption is endemic in INDIA especially here in GOA...
Please inform poeple to always keep one foot in the U.K.

Footnote......It always ends in tears.....

I have emailed the solicitor for Peter Marvey's email address. The solicitor says Marvey is still based in Ilford. He is waiting for Peter to send his email address and he says he will send it to me when he gets it. The solicitor says he has sent a cheque for Marvey to deposit in my account. I don't know how he would manage that and I have certainly not received anything.

This is a trifle off topic but couldn't Spain be twinned with Goa vis a vis property scams?

I think the main difference being that you cant own a property at all in Goa unless you are a Natioanl. In Spain you can own a property. Yes there have been problems in Spain, but a lot of it is due to people haing houses built on Rural land that you are not allowed to build on running hand in hand with the age old system the Spanish had of applying for planning permission after the event (which has now been tightened up on)
