Goa is doomed !!!

Hi Remy
The Raving Monster Loony Party had it's HQ in a pub down the road from where I live, you wouldn't want to go there.
It reminds me more of Midnight Express, doubt it would be like Porridge
Notice on Goan Voice that, that woman is back trying to flog property to the Irish in Belfast, said to give Goa a Punt or a Rupee, obviously no idea of currency, separation or geography.
Regards

Hi All,
Overdevelopment, overflowing sewage from septic tanks, rubbish everywhere, traffic congestion and pollution, contaminated water, political corruption and termoil...........is Goa really one of the most 'developed' states in India?........or has overdevelopment and poor infrastructure doomed the Goa we love to the history books?
Whats your take on this?
Are things improving or are they getting worse?
Post your views and nightmare experiences here.......

Is there just one single Brit who isn't an incessant whiner/complainer?
Are things improving or are they getting worse?
Same story at thaivisa.com, a Brit expat site with 60k members in Thailand. I'm an expat there and I can tell you one has to drill thru' loads of crap to get even a mere morsel of relevant, accurate info -- reams of drivel, complaints & whining seem to be on the menu daily.
Contemplating a move to Goa - need good info but dealing with such depressing folk it might be better to just move to Iraq?
Wake up dudes -- you used to own an empire - squandered no doubt, but hey, you're forgiven.
Well?

If you do your homework you will see that us 'Brits' are whinging the least about Goa at the moment. I suggest you take a read at The Goan News, Navhind Times or The Goan Herald......if you do you will see many articles of complaint to the point of rioting over SEZs by the Goans themselves. Heres just one article from this weeks Herald although there are many many more.
Citizens up in arms over a ‘stinking’ Calangute
BY JANIM XAVIER
SALIGAO, DEC 25 – The globally well-known ‘Queen of Beaches’, Goa’s major tourist destination, is slowly but surely turning into a ‘Queen of stink.’
Nothing but the filth and garbage strewn all over the place, welcomes tourists as they enter the village.
In a meeting to take stock of the situation, which is attaining serious proportions, the newly launched Calangute United, a Non-Governmental Organisation, headed by Anthony Menezes, organized a meeting of the people of Calangute, Primary Health Centre officer, Dr Sachin Govekar, Mr Agnelo Fernandes, Calangute Member of the Legislative Assembly, Ms Abelina Menezes, Calangute Zilla Parishad representative, Mr Albert Fernandes, Calangute sarpanch and other panchayat members to resolve the menace.
The large number of citizens attending the meeting came down heavily on the unhygienic atmosphere of the market area, posing a threat to diseases with the presence of scattered decomposed vegetable waste, open drains containing stagnant water, leaving a bad stench all around.
Citizens also strongly recommended that immediate action be taken with regards to overflowing septic tanks and soak pits. They charged that at many places drinking water pipelines were running in close proximity to these overflowing soak pits.
Another widespread nuisance brought to light is the fact that 100’s of non-migrants laborers residing in Calangute, answering nature’s call in the open surroundings, in the absence of toilets which is mandatory on the part of the contractor concerned to provide. The stench emanating from such unhealthy practices is badly affecting the Calangute citizens.
Dr. Sachin Govekar, officer of Primary Health Center, Candolim, who attended the meeting assured the gathering that if they register a complaint against overflowing septic tanks and soak pits with his office, he would do the needful. Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes disclosed that he had three years back proposed a sewerage treatment plant for Calangute Constituency, of which the process of tendering the work has already been floated.
With regards to the menace of migrant’s relieving themselves in the open, he disclosed that it was the duty of the panchayat, to inspect the area and verify for themselves, if the contractor/landlord has provided toilets for the migrant labourers, and according report to his office, for further action, if such facilities have not been made available.
The Health Department would then inspect the vicinity and fine the concerned contractor/landlord. And if the contractor continues to defy the rules thereby, the panchayat should revoke his license.
MLA Agnelo Fernandes expressed the same sentiments of Dr Govekar that stringent action must be taken against the builders who are in contravention of the laws. He asked the panchayat members present to revoke licenses of defaulting builders.
With regards to the deplorable unhygienic condition of the market, it was agreed that Health Officer Dr Govekar, Calangute Panchayat officials and representatives of the NGO- Calangute United would conduct an inspection of the market to assess the unhygienic condition of the market. Calangute United President, Anthony Menezes, also offered that his NGO could take up the disposal of garbage and maintain cleanliness of the market, if the Panchayat were facing any difficulties with the same.
Calangute United has set a deadline of two weeks for the authorities to fulfill their promises to the people.

PS.
If you are contemplating a move to Goa.....then the best advice i can give you is to take off the rose tainted glasses and read the so called depressing threads as well as the sunshine and surf ones.....otherwise when you move to Goa (and unless you are a PIO/NRI you will have problems doing this anyway) you may be in for a shock.

No!
Were I to listen to the Thai Media or collective Brit expat thought, I'd have left Thailand a long time ago or perhaps never even checked it out in the first place.
Why am I at this webboard? .... Without giving up what I have in Thailand, which thus far has been the absolute best country to expat in, I would like to add Goa to my small inventory, perhaps 3-6 months/yr. Why? Several visits in the antediluvian past, possibly other lifetimes too, impel me. Caju Feni, masala pomfrets, south indian dishes, stunning beaches .... yeah, I might be answering my own questions ..

I like many others on this site love Goa....warts and all. I have been travelling there for over twelve years and also own property there.
Godwilling i will continue to visit Goa for many years to come as well as other places.......however it would not be accurate or fair to others if those of us with first hand experience of Goa, were not to pass on our POV, opinions and experiences including the bad ones.
Goa does have a real battle going on between the locals, developers, corrupt politicians and FNs at the moment.........many members on this site are actually caught up in the middle of this debacle and if you read the 'Buyer Beware' thread you will start to understand what many expats in Goa are going through at present. Now IMHO it is the responsibility of expats everywhere to warn and educate others about the pitfalls of moving, retiring and living in a foreign country as its probably the biggest decision they will ever make and should not be entered into lightly.
It is also imperative that potential expats do their own homework and research before diving in head first.
This site offers great information on Goa, from Favourite restaurants and beach shacks to meet ups, daytrips and accomodation costs. It also has threads on visa and property problems and crime and corruption......both sides of the coin if you like. It is unfair and foolish to take a snippet from one post and then make a false assumtion based on this as to the attitude and mindset of the posters and members.
We all have an interest in Goa or we would'nt be on this site but accurate information be it good or bad should always be welcome as many FNs in Goa and indeed BE members have fallen foul of mis-information and mis-representation costing them a lot both financially and emmotionally.....and dispite this we still love Goa even if Goa does'nt love us.
Hope this helps to highlight to yourself the depth of feeling, commitment and love that we have for Goa on here......but we must paint an accurate picture to others or we will be simply mis-leading and mis-informing them.
Regards,
Remy

OK Remy, you want to give us newbies the true score, right? .... here's your opener of this thread with the stunning title, "Goa is doomed!!"
Now tell me, Remy, what's a newbie to think when he reads your opener? .... esp. if said newbie has come across your posts and name elsewhere on the site and correctly concluded you wear a fancy 2-gun rig and are a heavy dude?

Proper balance had to be literally coaxed out of you as is evident in your follow-ups --
"I like many others on this site love Goa....warts and all .... (add the rest of your last post, quoted above)"
-----------------------
you mentioned rose-tinted glasses in a previous post -- I assumed you were referring to the various scams, property and other, that have been written about in various threads here.
Just one example: buying property in a 3rd world foreign country -- that too, on a tourist visa? ... and when RBI website clearly states No, no, no!

You think you're going to be able to change the statistic of rear-ended individuals by your and others' admonishings and warnings?
Dream on.
Just like the markets for stocks, bonds, currencies, commodities and Interest Rates, the public is, has always been and will always comprise 90%+ losers despite what the SEC, FSA or any governmental or other agency does to alert, educate or warn the pubic.
History guarantees the same outcome as has been so for aeons. It will always be so. That's just the way it is. No need to sweat it.
Bottomline: regardless what you do or say about the property fiasco, the % getting scammed will remain unchanged, the education notwithstanding.
Happy New Year Remy.

Looks like your doing quite a bit of whinging here yourself.

Regarding the rose tinted glasses...no i wasn'nt just referring to the property fiasco and referring to the Goa Doomed thread ....this is just one thread and post out of over 1000 that i have contributed to on BE....hence my remark on pulling out snipits and then making unqualified judgements on the posters.
Oh and for your information...i havent bought on a tourist visa....if you had bothered to read my profile you would see that i am indeed a PIO....but leaving that aside the Buyer Beware thread has sucessfully educated others as to the pitfalls of buying property in Goa and some have managed to get their money back or cancel transactions so yes it has made a differance. As you can see it has had over 30000 views.....so it most be a topic of interest out there, maybe not for you but certainly for many others.
Now speaking as an Indian and in tune with many Goans ........Goa has indeed got major infrastucture problems......now if you dont want to believe this or accept it then thats certainly your perogative and more power to you. I make no apologies for stating the obvious....but if you think that by doing so....i somehow hate Goa, India etc then you are gravely mistaken. The opener of Goa is Doomed is accurate and if it offends you then maybe Goa is'nt for you......incidently have you been there yet? If not then why shoot down those of us who have?
I have many friends and indeed family right across India......and as its my country of origin i am well aware of its attraction, its beauty and its problems. I am curious to know why you defend a country you have not been to and condemn the views and opinions of those who have been there...many times.
Listen, everyone is entitled to their POV on BE but OMG man take a chill pill and calm down a bit or you'll give yourself an ulcer. Go to Goa by all means and have a good time and when you come back let us know what you think......in the meantime please check out some of the other threads on this site and stay away from the doom and gloom ones if they offend you so much.
Regards,
Remy
PS. Happy New Year also.

we've crossed into the twilight zone, Remi.>>>>> I have many friends and indeed family right across India......and as its my country of origin i am well aware of its attraction, its beauty and its problems. I am indian, born and raised in Bombay till age 23, then off to Europe etc, now a US citizen from Calif., 100% goan from Saligao, parents, brothers and sister live in Bombay. Back in the early 70s I & other students at IIT Kharagpur (a long ways away) would make a beeline for Goa for the holidays, sometimes not even bothering to stop in Bombay to see Mum and Dad first.

Calangute, Candolim, Baga, Anjuna, Vagator were our hangouts. Those were the days when the Boogaloo was right there at Calangute beach, just behind the tourist hotel and Souza Lobo's was the best place to eat. Even had access to the genuine Caju Feni and old Port.
Took my first wife, an american girl to Goa in 1982 on our honeymoon. Even used traditional toilets at an ancestral home in Arpora, where she got bit on the a*s by a pig - she seemed satisfied with the explanation that the pig was probably more scared than she was because it had never seen a white a*s before.
My last visit was in 1994. I'm out of touch, but like riding a bike .....
Defend Goa or India from these sh*t stompers? You're damn straight. They don't need much of an excuse to take out an entire country & they are in that mode again!

Hi all,
In to-day's Navhinda Times/Panorama/
TOURIM: the hen that lays the golden eggs
The tourism industry is very worried. There is a drop in arrivals, ranging from 10 per cent and above at the operators/service provider level and a flat 25% in hotel bookings. There were rooms available for Christmas, and there are rooms available for New Year. As one hotelier put it. THE DAYS OF CHOCK A BLOCK ARE OVER.
It is very quiet here compared to other years, but the Government shot themselves in the foot and have nobody but themselves to blame.
Why should people wait 8 weeks for a visa and pay the extra for the privilege, If you were came to Goa for the first time and came when the charters arrived in October - end November and no shacks up - would you come back!!!!
I feel it will be quieter again next year.

Hi All,
Overdevelopment, overflowing sewage from septic tanks, rubbish everywhere, traffic congestion and pollution, contaminated water, political corruption and termoil...........is Goa really one of the most 'developed' states in India?........or has overdevelopment and poor infrastructure doomed the Goa we love to the history books?
Whats your take on this?
Are things improving or are they getting worse?
Post your views and nightmare experiences here.......

For the benefit of goans:
0.7555 (see chart) is the line in the sand & we've been heading there since August 2006
GBPINR aka Pound versus Indian Rupee can deliver ALL you will ever need to know when it comes to dealing with the Brits & Goa/India.
The law from which this is derived? ... in layman's terms, "its always about the f***in money!
Look at the attached monthly chart of GBPINR.
Aug'06 - current ..... complaints with a cap C.
Feb'04 - Jul'05 ..... complaints galore - check it out - why? .. Pound going down
Aug'05-Aug'06 ... period of benevolence = less complaints, more spending ... Why? .... Pound going up.
Go earlier, research the news articles if you like. Same story.
So what's the big deal?
What could now occur has not occurred for at least 23 years.
The Pound is getting ready to retrace/correct the ENTIRE runup from Feb 1985. When it does materialize, it will be a massive downward move to a minimum of Fibonacci 38.2% retracement level. Let's not even talk about the 50% or 61.8% retracement levels.
If this does occur, expect complaints galore, recrimminations ....... and dwindling numbers of arrivals each month. If Brits are the major tourists in Goa, goan business will have to look to other countries to fill the void. Apply the same technique.
When will we know for sure when the intent has manifested itself into reality?
GBPINR < 0.7555 on a weekly closing basis.

Now we get a picture of why you say what you say.... but a bit of friendly advice.....when you get back to Goa you will see that the Goans are complaining about the lack of Brits returning to Goa and how the place is inundated with Russians and Israelis who contribute little to the economy. I am only back from Goa less than 2 weeks and like it or not the fact is that the Goan people are missing the British tourists bigtime and of course their financial contribution. Now most of the people on here have remained committed to Goa for years and are now doing so through extreme adversity from the Indian government over visas(which is to do with a tit for tat Indian/British visa war and nothing to do with tourism) therfore referring to your last paragraph.....its the likes of people on here who are fighting for Goa some of which have obtained residency and now consider themselves Goan...they too dont want to see 18 SEZs in place at a cost to Goas greenbelt and beauty....many support charities and work in them and contribute to the livlihoods of many Goans year after year.....referring to them as 's***stompers' in a mode to take out the country is both ludicrous and totally out of touch with fact and reality. I'm not having a go at you but if in doubt then please do your own homework....and listen to what the Goan people are saying about the situation themselves.
The Goans are very much up in arms over the influx of migrant workers flooding the state, russians and israelis who are involved in drug and people trafficking, politicians who are selling Goa to developers against the wishes of the people etc etc.......none that i have talked to are anti british and many are worried that British and Charter tourism is decreasing at a cost to their livlihoods.
Therefore i can't really figure out who your beef is with
.....you appear anti-british and yet i can't understand why.....you admit that your out of touch....but refuse to accept other peoples POV, experiences etc. You say your last visit to Goa was almost 14 years ago......OMG you will be in for a shock when you return......even Arpora where i also live.....has changed so much that you probably wont recognise the place. The transformation between 1994 and now is arguably a fine line between development and destruction......you will have to make up your own mind on this. All in All i admire your love of India but when you return to Goa you will understand that our gripes and complaints are because we dont want to see Goa destroyed, divided and sold to developers by greedy politicians....this behaviour we dont support.....neither does the majority of Goans. The Goa you described from the seventies has already dissapeared and is resigned to the history books forever. Please dont shoot down those of us who raise awareness, visit, live and retire in Goa because of our love for the place.....we're friends not foe....you need to be directing your bullets somewhere else because your kinda shooting yourself in the foot me thinks.

Remy you are so right. We are in Goa now and have been since October, it has been so quiet. The local tailor is not ordering any more materials (the biggest tailor in Candolim) The resturants are quiet except for the exceptional few, and once the Indian Tourist have left after New Year it will be very quiet again.
The two shacks next to ours in Candolim had at the most 6 people in to-day whilst I must say ours has its regulars as it gives such good service.
Baseline you will have such a shock when you come back here. every year we cannot believe the buildings that have been put up, new shops, a huge supermarket - nothing like the Goa we loved 15 years ago. I suggest you come back and then give us your comments. omg.
It has been difficult previous years to purchase tickets for New Years Eve at the Marquis = this year they were delivering them to us!!!!!. need the business or what?
