I cannot believe for one moment that Gordon Brown/Foreign Office, on Sunday, got their arses into gear to send notice to India re the property fiasco. I personally think that the paper has taken that out of context and is from when the petition was sent in to Downing Street. I hope I am wrong. |

Britons face losing Indian holiday homes
Hundreds of Britons face losing their holiday and retirement homes in Goa, India's holiday state, the Foreign Office has warned. y Dean Nelson in New Delhi Published: 3:13PM BST 21 Sep 2009 Many were drawn by the lure of cheap apartments and fine Portugese villas, but they risk falling victim to a new campaign by the state government. Dozens of British couples have had their properties seized. More than 400 foreigners, mainly Britons, are being investigated for allegedly breaking local property laws, despite often receiving legal advice. Most bought their properties by setting up a local company in sectors like tourism, under advice that the Reserve Bank of India would then approve the purchase. But Goa's state government, under pressure from local people who blame foreign home owners for driving up prices, has since ordered its land registrars not to issue deeds to any more buyers from overseas. Hundreds of Britons have properties which they are allowed to live in - but cannot sell or formally register as their own. Vikram Varma, a local lawyer, said more than 1,000 people might have been caught out. "Most who come here are as trusting in the efficiency of the system in India as they are in the UK. But here it's entirely different," said Mr Varma. Su Peplow, a director of a medical research association, decided to retire to Goa with her husband in 2005. They invested more than £20,000 in a two-storey flat under construction. The couple signed a contract for a 56-month lease with a right to buy. After her husband died in 2006, Mrs Peplow decided to proceed with the purchase alone and paid the builder for registration of the deeds. But he claimed to be unable to transfer the deeds as this would be "breaking Goan laws". The Foreign Office said it had raised concerns with the Indian authorities. "We have made clear that there should be no confiscation of property acquired legally by British nationals," it said. |

http://www.goanvoice.org.uk/gvuk_fil..._25_Sep_09.pdf Looming Threat Over Goa. It is a copied page but you enlarge it on the % button then it is easy to read. Tells just who is "running" Goa. |
