Sadly bringing back hanging would not stop this type of crime, nobody that commits a crime does so thinking they will get caught. Further, mistakes are made, as history has shown and a posthumous apology is not really a lot of compensation. Finally, capital punishment just reduces those authorising the punishment to the level of those that committed the crime.

However I confess to being a total hypocrite, if it were my son or one of my grand children then I would want to inflict the most horrendous and painful retribution.

In the case of the murder of these two policewomen I disagree with you Steve as I think the scumbag responsible committed this heinous act with the full intention of getting caught. In fact I would view the sequence of events on his part as his sick attempt to 'go out in a blaze' (in his twisted mind) - by committing atrocities so far outside the usual British criminal 'norm' - thereby ensuring his fame through the notoriety of his crimes.

He was fully aware that he was already wanted for two previous murders, in fact he could hardly not be aware bearing in mind there has been an advertised reward for his capture. He has then sought out an empty house which has been empty for some time and occupied this. He has armed himself not just with firearms, but with grenades and explosives as well. He has then called police and made a false report of burglary to lure police to the address for no other reason than to murder in cold blood the first police officers who attended - which happened to be those two young women.
Following the commission of this premeditated and acutely planned atrocity, he calmly walked into a local nick and presented himself for arrest.

Those are the actions of a sociopathic piece of shxt who is looking to be 'up there' with the likes of Ian Huntley and the Yorkshire Ripper when in "HMP Butlins!"

Personally I hope that some of the 'anti nonce' (prison term) hard men of HMP decide to make this low life coward their 'bitch' for the duration of his time there. They will do a much better job on him than any death penalty will do !

How about some wisdom from an Indian chap:

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.

I sympathise with what you are saying Dread but you can't change the law for individual crimes; you are either going to have capitol punishment or not. If as it is at the moment its ''not'' then there can be no exceptions. I believe we are a far more civilised society for not having capital punishment but as I said before if it were one of mine I would want the most heinous retribution. Yes I know that is also a dual standard and I recognise it as being wrong but.................

Errr did you read my post Steve?
I have not referred to wanting capital punishment. I have disagreed with you not on capital punishment but on whether people commit crimes wanting to get caught.
Dude me thinks we are crossing wires here and actually not disagreeing on the Death penalty issue.

Which particular truth?
That untouchability is right?
That you should be a vegetarian to please your mother?
That you should live on nuts and seed sprouts to purify the body?
That you should abstain from sex, and so should your companions - but they should sleep in proximity to each other to test them?
That its OK for South African blacks to be penalised as long as it doesn't apply to coloureds?
That your family should empty guests' chamber pots?
That untouchability is wrong after all?
That your children should be denied decent schooling?
That vegetarianism is right after all?
That Indian villagers should be kept in feudal simplicity, doing traditional tasks like spinning weaving and making pots without any benefit of science or technology?
???

In my alternate universe a chap who can be wrong about so many things would not be considered a source of universal truth - which was my point.

I thought the question was whether wishing violence on someone who has already committed violence was constructive. You, presumably, disagree with Gandhi and think it might be. Though if you wander off on your current course, we may never find out.

If you must pursue a neocon-style ad hominem attack on the dead messenger instead, choose one of your points and provide suitable links. A quick Google on your one about education produced nothing, though I must admit I didn't look at nuttyneocon.com. There were some fine quotes from the good man, though.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”
