Re: In To-day's Newspapers
There are two sorts of 'special status': one which, amongst other things, allows restrictions on 'out of state' ownership of land, and one which just gets exra funds from the centre. Local politicians in Goa are often deliberately vague as to which version they are talking about - and anyway know that the centre isn't about to grant either - their rhetoric is just for local consumption. Apart from the usual political vagueness it seems to me that Chidambaram 'just said no'. AndyD 8-)# |

Chief minister Digambar Kamat said that government would deposit Rs 25,000 as a fix deposit amount in the bank in the name of girl child born after April 1, 2011 in Goa. As per this year’s government statistics, Goa’s sex ratio is 968:1000. www.goanvoice.org.uk Oh bugger, just had a daughter in July, born in Bombay, wish I could fiddle the birth certificate! |

So many comments on the UK riots but this is also a Goa (India) site and no comments on the peaceful anti-corruption demonstrations going on all over India. Some are saying (on NDTV) that this may be a "once in a life-time sight" with so many coming out in support of Anna Hazare. |

Police quiz GCA prez in fake certificate case Press Trust Of India Posted on Jan 14, 2011 at 02:41pm IST Panaji: Goa Cricket Association (GCA) President Dayanand Narvekar was quizzed by the Goa police in connection with a case where he allegedly forged the birth certificate of his son Ganeshraj, a state level cricketer, to facilitate his participation in an under-15 tournament. Police Inspector Rajesh Kumar told PTI that Narvekar, along with his wife Sushma and son Ganeshraj, was questioned on the issue on Thursday. He. however. refused to divulge any further information provided by Narvekars as he said the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. Former GCA Executive member Shekhar Salkar has filed complaint against Narvekar, a Congress legislator and his family for forging birth certificate of his son to let him play cricket thrice in under-15 category. Salkar, in his complaint before Mapusa police in November 2010, had alleged that Ganeshraj - after playing for two seasons (2005-06 and 2006-07) for South Zone under-15 cricket tourney - was allowed to play for the third year by changing his name. The complaint mentions that Ganeshraj's name was changed to Anish, which is his pet name; a fake birth certificate was attached to get him under-15 category. "The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) rules make it mandatory that no player can play for three times under-15 category as he crosses the age," Salkar said. The complainant has also attached birth certificate copies procured under Right To Information Act, which show that Ganeshraj has two birth certificates. As per GCA record, his birthdate is September 1, 1993, while a certificate procured from a municipality shows it as February 28, 1993. The police complaint also states that Ganeshraj has given another birth certificate claiming his birthday as February 28, 1992. Salkar described Narvekar's act as a "cricketing fraud" and said the accused thereby snatched a chance of another player to play in the squad. I wonder if those living in South Goa would be interested in this report (it's just 'next door'). The famous 'Tagore Beach' (also mentioned for its beauty by the travel writer Dervla Murphy) has gradually been spoilt. First the inevitable extension of the NH-17, but right along the beach line. Then the 'Sea Bird Project'; now they want several acres for a coast guard office!!!! |

20% decline in UK tourist bookings to Goa
20 Aug: Times of India. The number of tourists booking seats from the UK to Goa during the last few days has declined by 20% following the unrest there … However, there are indications that the season will be the same as last year when 55,000 UK travellers visited Goa … the first charter flight from the UK will arrive in Goa on November 4 www.goanvoice.org.uk |
