Re: In To-day's Newspapers

I know this is not Goa, but a good indicator of how careful we all need to be these days, especially the ladies.
Somebody recently on this forum described Goa as the Zimbabwe of India.......at least this allowed you the confidence that you could appeal to central Government?
This article and the much reported sudden awakening of central Government to the serious crime of a few foreigners buying a home in a country of 1.3 billion people, has convinced me that..........
India is the Zimbabwe of Asia!

Victim's anger at Indian government

Sex attacks on foreign tourists are not being taken seriously by the Indian government, according to a British woman whose rapist was released on bail after serving three months of a 21-year jail sentence.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke out as the country's secretary for culture and tourism Sujit Banerjee visited London on a trip to promote the country.

She was brutally assaulted on Christmas Eve last year, suffering bleeding and convulsions for days afterwards and was forced to remain in India for four months while her attacker Parbat Singh went on trial.

The case gained publicity in the wake of the rape and murder of teenager Scarlett Keeling, who was killed in Goa in February.

Singh was granted bail in July and the woman said government prosecutors failed to attend a Supreme Court hearing in the case yesterday.

Branding Delhi the "rape capital of the world", she said: "They are clearly not taking it seriously. If the government fails to turn up at the Supreme Court, that's not taking it seriously, that's the complete opposite. I'm not talking about just me, they need to take the level of sexual crime against women in India very seriously."

Last year, more than five million tourists visited India, with the most coming from America and the UK. Government statistics earlier this year suggested rape is the fastest growing crime in the country.

When asked if any action would be taken about Singh's case, Mr Banerjee said: "The Indian government is fully aware of all these incidents that happen, but nevertheless they are very strange incidents which occur.

"The law has to take its own course, but the Indian government is fully conscious of its duties and responsibilities in this regard and these cases are taken very seriously. But you know and we know that the law has to take its own course and that will be done."

The woman said reasons were not given for granting Singh bail and there was no hearing offering the chance to oppose the move, contrary to the correct process in Indian courts. The case will come before a registrar at the Supreme Court on December 3, after which there will be a further hearing to decide whether he should be on bail.
PLEASE, MILWARD, GIVE US THE BENEFIT OF YOUR OPINION ON THIS, WE WAIT WITH BATED BREATH?

Comments like the above are extremely unhelpful. It's not like rape (as evil as it is) doesn't happen on a daily basis in the UK.

yes, but at least many of the rapists get punished for their crimes! i take it your a man? you should try being a woman alone travelling India these days, especially in Delhi, its pretty scary. the sexist remarks are disgusting, its got really bad now and goa is too now, i'm afraid. my male friends always escorted me to my door as i had to park my car on the edge of the village and walk in the dark. we hung out in goa coz it woz safe, not any more! and trust the local boys? NEVER.

Mr (or Ms?) Gruber
Unhelpful is trying to pretend that Goa, or India, is some kind of tropical paradise still, even if it used to be!
Please read the new post referring to Mugging
This forum is about what is going on in Goa, not the UK
At least in the UK the authorities treat an offence thoroughly, not try to brush it under the carpet
Here on this forum we deal in realities, what is going on at "ground zero" not what we wish it was like in a perfect world.
Most of us have spent large parts of our life in Goa for many, many years and dislike immensely what has happened to the place recently but......
Unhelpful is allowing people like yourself, who have only just realised that they cant buy a holiday home in Goa legally, although this has been the case for a couple of years, to wander blithely around in Goa thinking it is the safe haven it was a few years ago.
Please, please, be careful if and when you go there

Re: In To-day's Newspapers

FROM TODAY'S (Online Edition- Lifestyles) DAILY TELEGRAPH;

There are grey areas: Britons whose only income is a pension can buy freehold – but only if they have been resident in India for more than 182 days of the previous year and show an intention to stay in the country. Even then, they must obtain residency and the approval of the Reserve Bank of India.
Well there's a new twist, and it must be true if its in the revered DT..............

Re: In To-day's Newspapers

to extend the quote a bit:

There are grey areas: Britons whose only income is a pension can buy freehold – but only if they have been resident in India for more than 182 days of the previous year and show an intention to stay in the country. Even then, they must obtain residency and the approval of the Reserve Bank of India.

Residency cannot be taken for granted. Many Britons bought leases on property in Goa – the Indian Riviera, where prices start from £18,000 for a one-bedroom flat – expecting to be able to convert to freehold ownership once residency had been achieved. But following a recent tightening of the residency rules, they now face possible confiscation of their property.
the usual glib inaccuracy!

Rape anger erupts at UK tourism date
13 Nov: The Telegraph (Calcutta). A British journalist, who was raped by a guesthouse owner in Rajasthan last year, today spoiled attempts to promote “Incredible India” at the World Trade Market here by accusing the Indian government of not giving due attention to sexual crimes against women… the senior Indian official who performed the ribbon-cutting at the India pavilion had to defend the government… according to Indian government statistics rape is apparently the country’s fastest-growing crime… 675 words.
more details..

:thumbdown:As the starter of the World Trade Market thread, I feel this serious report should be shown on this thread ! apologies, I know this post already appears but it is "worthy" of being shown to ALL who read British expats :curse:
