Foreign tourists looted at gunpoint in Goa

26 Aug: IANS. Two foreign tourists and a local resident were looted at gunpoint in Calangute ... The three, Imyigo Ardanaz (Spain) and Petra Artiz (Hungary) and the local Karen Roach were returning home from a bar on a motorcycle when two unidentified people robbed them at gun point in the early hours of Wednesday... at least one of the gunmen appeared to be a local because he spoke in Konkani ...

And the local Karen Roach..................

Doesnt the "local" media have the brain-power to work out this is not a very Goan name?
So its either a gross mis-spelling or maybe, just maybe, a British person resident in Goa?

The news article describes this as a "new event" for Zimbabwe-on-Sea, more a logical progression as taxi drivers and shacketeers find new ways to supplement their dwindling income maybe?

HI, Just gettng ready to leave for our second two months MANDATORY two months out. UK last time Sri Lanka this time, we are going before the 180 day's as we want to be back for Christmas in Goa.

Was reading some back issues of Herald came across a letter dated 28th August . It me think Oh if only.

Want foreigners to leave?
Svatantra Sarjano, Vagator
I was truly appalled on reading ‘New visa rules prove a harrowing affair for this retired foreign couple’ (Herald, 28 August) about the misadventures of Charles and Handrika Hayez, that too in a country that pretends to be famous for its hospitality.
Why is Goa doing everything in its power to get rid of foreigners? This is the impression one gets from the behaviour of our bureaucrats and their stupid rules. Why doesn’t our government provide people like this couple, which only wants to live here peacefully, some kind of ‘Resident Visa’ or ‘Lovers Visa’… that does not require an exit every six months?
I am in the same situation. After 34 years in India, I still have to go out periodically just to get a new visa. I calculated that in all these years, I must have spent over Rs30 lakh only to get myself new visas! I would have spent all that money here, in Goa, rather than on such stupid things, but what can I do if this is the so-called law?
That is why I want to suggest to our authority to create a new form of visa, at least for wanna be residents like this affectionate couple or for people like me, that works in Goa, write on the Herald, publish book in India, pay regularly a huge amount of taxes and for what? To be kicked out every six month so he can get a new visa!
If the Goa government manages a human way to deal with the visas, we will see thousands of people happily choose Goa as a place to spend their retirement. It will demonstrate that hospitality here is not just a word, but has a real meaning.

This new rule(kept very quiet) is despicable!J
Well it isn't really a new rule - it's an exception to the [new] 2-month rule, and the intention of the 2-month rule is to prevent 'visa trips'.

Goa's beaches turn black, oil spill suspected

Panaji: Goa's popular beaches turned black on Monday evening due to a suspected oil spill off the coast of Panaji.

Beaches like Calangute, Siquerim, Candolim in north Goa and Colva, Betalbhatim and Sernabhatim in the south were covered with black tar balls, eyewitnesses said.

"Entire south Goa beaches are covered with black oil which has been washed ashore," a source said.

Tourism Department Director Swapnil Naik said they have sent teams to take stock of the situation. He said there was no cause for panic.

"There is nothing to be alarmed. Usually such tar balls surface on the beaches during monsoons," Naik said.

Collision of two merchant ships off the Mumbai coast on August 7 had caused a massive oil slick in the metropolis' shores and some surrounding areas.
