Wow I heard Tipsy just sacked Varoufakis as he now wants to negotiate in a grown up fashion as time is running out. Some massive progress in the chance of a settlement after all the posturing.

Can you imagine a referendum on a Greek pitch?

"1. Dear Eurozone citizens, we are in default on our IMF payment [and probably ECB payment by the time a referendum has been put forward] and we need more money on highly concessional interest terms. We would also like a haircut on our existing debt. We would like to borrow this on our own terms.

...So basically free money to spend as we see fit. Would you be willing to pay increased taxation across the Eurozone to fund our proposition?

2. We also need more cash to keep the cash machines dispensing, would you be willing to continue to swap Greek 'equity' for cash so banks can keep dispensing?"

Taunting the eurozone members with allegations of being undemocratic of financial terrorists in their position. The very last thing Greece needs is for ordinary europeans to have a say in a bailout package.

The mild-mannered, Oxford educated Euclid Tsakalotos set to replace Charybdis, who's work is done.

Syriza will be hoping the emollient approach works, but difficult to see how the Troika can turn the taps back on without significant conditions attached. After all, there are other EU debtor nations watching closely.

I think it was was a pre-condition by the European Finance Ministers for any new discussions to take place.

The EU are going to be very tough on Greece and they don't mind how long it takes. They will have real trouble getting another deal past their respective governments unless there are verifiable reforms taking place alongside future financing.

Personally, I still think it is unlikely there will be a deal because the two sides are further part than ever.

PM Tsipras is "now in a race against time to stop an all-out collapse of Greek banks".
The door remains open for bailout talks with Greece, following the No vote, but they cannot start yet, German Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman says. "In light of the decision by the Greek citizens, the conditions to start negotiations on a new aid programme are not met yet", Steffen Seibert said.
All the time in the world now . This week...next month...

I tend to agree but of the few moves that Tipsy has left this sacking is easy for him and universally (less Eric) popular.

Gotta get some cash somewhere. Vlad's conditions arent likely to be much more attractive. Probably involves both Russian seaports and the possibility of becoming a Russian state. After all the language is similar - a key argument in he Ukrainian debate. Neither of which are consistent with the dream of the "peoples republic of Greece".

But BO. will pressure all involved inc IMF to ensure that will never happen. Pipelines would be the limit I reckon, no setting up a GR island as a sort of Med Goldfinger refuelling/Sub base. Another Cuba !!!!!!!

The replacement, pretty-much universally described as "mild-mannered, Oxford educated", may have a different style but is rumoured to be more "hardline" than Varoufakis and a tough negotiator. I caught a glimpse of him speaking very sound sense in a short TV clip yesterday. He appears to share Varoufakis' aversion to ties and has been seen wearing a scarf - hope that's ok with creditors and journos.

One of the other moves Tsipras made was to get most of the other political parties behind him in a statement to the creditors - quite a feat given that they had agitated for a Yes vote in the referendum. It seems he will be involving them in discussions in Greece in future.

I notice a significant change in the attitude outside Greece, with more support for making concessions - Renzi's remarks on Sunday and yesterday, Spanish FinMin de Guindos seems to have softened up considerably, Hollande more for a quick settlement.

Renzi was anything but soft on state TV on Sunday. Yesterday he was a bit more condescending but still lying through his teeth. The latest on the Italian public debt this morning is that it has risen to a whopping 156% of PIL. a 14% increase.
Paduan is still insisting that the PD's reforms are working............................and Merkel is looking through the eyes of love believing every word that Matteo utters.
