I think it is considered a 'crossover', it is a good sturdy car that holds well on the road, and anyone we talk to really rate it as a good car.

Actually in North American terms, the caliber is a compact car. A crossover would be the Dodge Journey.

Surely an SUV is necessarily a vehicle larger than needed with less interior space than appropriate for the exterior dimensions. It can't be fuel efficient because a van or estate car of the same interior capacity is more aerodynamic. It's a styling exercise in which fuel economy is sacrificed for the appearance of being able to mount small kerbs. All that said, I found the Toyota Land Cruiser to be reasonably economical for something that could carry 20 small square bales across any terrain. It returned a consistent 14mpg.

But the Estate car scarcely exists in North America. Subaru Outback, Golf Estate, Mercedes whatever, that's about it. Failing that, if one needs a larger vehicle then a SUV, Crossover or <shudders> minivan is the only choice. Sad but true.

Its a bit of an oxymoron, especially if you have something full "Explorer" size in mind. I like my Subarus, a Forrester would probably count as an SUV with good millage, although I only get between 9-10l / 100km from my similarly engined legacy wagon. Compared to 7 or less from the Civic.

Bare in mind too that a 2.5l gasoline engine here is on the frugal end. None of your 2l turbodiesels to be found here. (except maybe the baby VW SUV?)

The caveat to that recommendation is of course that you get the same functionality and better economy from an imprezza... Very few people actually need an SUV.

Novo has an estate car. At least, the Elantra Touring looks like an estate car to the naked eye. I wouldn't be seen dead in one but my vehicle choices are not much influenced by practicality. Few peoples' are or we'd all be snoring along in Fusions, Camrys and Civics.

VW Toureg and Mercedes ML turbo diesels return 9.5 l/100kms. That's about as good as you'll get from a full size SUV. I had a gas ML and averaged 12. Going down in size, my gas Forester XT got 10. The non turbos are somewhat better, but less fun to drive.

Our legacy is non turbo. I get about 10l/100km from it, she gets about 8 on average.

However, I get wherever we are going a lot sooner.

Nissan Xterra's seem to hold their prices fairly well as do Freelanders/Land Rovers, smaller engined Explorer's are not horrendous on gas and neither are smaller engined Jeeps, I quite enjoyed the Liberty I had during the winter last year, it was a standard too and pretty sure footed in the snow and ice.

We have had more than our fair share of cars, gas consumption doesn't usually enter the equation, it's more of OH wants it, so OH gets it. Gas pigs that come to mind Jeep Grand Cherokee and Lincoln Navigator on the bigger ones and awful in the snow was a Dodge Durango, that was one of the briefest owned vehicles after months of looking for one

2WD trucks are also difficult in the snow and ice as are Mustangs

Unless someone knows of dood priced version that gives decent mpg. Maybe like a Nissan Juke or something.

Have you considered a roof-rack?

I think I must have looked at lot of SUV's now but they all seem to have quite bad mpg's. I wanted a SUV as I'm quite tall and having someone sit behind me in a standard car means their legs wont fit. I will try to find a car now.

You dont say
How tall?

Bare in mind that cars here are in general a lot larger than in the UK. Any midsize car will have reasonable room in the back, and if you go larger you can hold a party back there.

SUVs really dont offer more interior legroom anyway, in fact the worst car Ive had here for rear space was the Jeep Cherokee. If you really need the rear legroom then look at minivans with the individual captains seats options. Gas Pigs, but better than SUVs.
