I haven't been much, but it seems OK - it generally gets bad press, but I don't see why. It has much the same as most other Canadian cities, housing tends to be a bit cheaper (although there is a property boom going on at the moment for some reason) - only downside is limited flights out of the airport, usually demanding routing through Toronto to get anywhere half decent!

Why Winnipeg??, you know thats a question I'm still often asked by people who have lived here all their lives, usually with a funny look on their faces, as if we are a little mad.
The simplified version of why Winnipeg.
We wanted to escape the UK for many reasons, and had frequent holidays by RV in Canada and loved it. Originally we wanted to go to BC, most probably Kelowna.
In May 2007 I had planned a trip to explore business opportunities in Edmonton & Calgary, during the planning stage someone from Manitoba Trade phoned my wife and spent 1.5hours convincing her to come and give MB a chance, he was successful and Winnipeg was added to my itinerary.
I arrived in Winnipeg on 1st of May 2007 (Tony Blair had just won his first victory in the Polls and was on his way to the Palace as my plane left the tarmac). The Great Flood of 97 crested in Winnipeg on the 3rd of May, the day before I left for Edmonton.
I spent 3 days in Winnipeg with all sorts of meetings organised for me by MB trade, Business's, Realtor, Banker, Government Ministers all sorts. I was really impressed by MB Trade.
During the course of my meetings I began to realise that my youngest son could be medically inadmisable due to being a severe dyslesic (as is the whole of our family, me included) he was so severe that at 7 years old we had been told he would never be able to read or write. MB Trade arranged a meeting for me with the MB Minister responsible for immigration, during that meeting I was told about a very special school in Winnipeg called The Laureate Academy" this school specialised in teaching children who though otherwise intelligent had problems with learning. So a meeting was arranged with the School. The school told me they would be able to get my son to read and write (they did). I left Winnipeg with a letter from the MB Immigration Minister saying that if our child went to the Laureate Academy they were very happy with us coming to MB.
So thats how we discovered Winnipeg, and decided to come here.
We have been here Ten years next year, we don't have mountains we do have:-
Lakes & Beaches for the summer.
Full City facilities including world class theater, ballet etc.
A city that is very livable, in the suburbs its just like living in a large British village or small town.
4 Seasons.
Friendly people.
A Stable economy (Winnipeg historically has not suffered the Highs & Lows of the fluctuating national economy).
Inexpensive living costs compared to most other major Canadian Cities.
Sunshine, lots and lots of it, all year.
We like it here.

Thats a great story. I'm curious to know how they managed to track you down when you were in the planning stage!? Spooky or what.
Whilst we certainly weren't actively recruited to NS like you were to Winnipeg I have to say that being made to feel like you are going to be genuinely welcome goes a long way to helping you to choose a place to live. We had that feeling when we first came to Nova Scotia. The immigration office were very helpful and while they didnt talk about bending the rules for us they let us know that we were the kind of people they were trying to attract. It does work - its a bit like finding out that someone who you were never particularly interested in fancies you when you are in school - it totally changes the way you feel about them. All the people we met (both "officials" as well as just people we stopped and chatted to in the street) made us feel that we would be welcome in Nova Scotia and by and large we have been.
To begin with its hard to get your head around the fact than an area would actually want immigrants!

Well done on escaping while TB was on the way to the palace.

Calgary because it's where all the jobs for my experience are (other than Fort McMurray
) and the Rocky mountains are nearby for great skiing. First preference would have been Vancouver for the less severe climate and Whistler.

Too often we hear that Winnipeg is a deep freeze in the winter time, prone to flooding in springtime and nothing but mosquito's the size of small aircraft in the summer. Its' nice to hear good things about the place.
I understand if you like camping and lakes you'll never come close to visiting every one in Manitoba. Apparently southern Manitoba also gets some spectacular dry thunderstorms with lots of lightning.

Cheers
Steve

Montreal, haven't been there yet but I got this gut feeling that's where I'll end up. Well, before I die that is, that's where I'll end up, dead.
