LOL I didn't say I was IN the Tufty Club ..... though I think one of my brothers might have been.... In those days kids didn't try so hard to be COOL, we were content to be kids :D

I'm glad somebody knew what I was talking about tho.

Hehe, this week I was telling a Canadian friend about Zebra crossings, which amused her ..... and how they developed into Pelican Crossings, which bemused her, especially as I couldn't begin to explain why they were Pelican crossings :p

Never had one as a kid, and now I can afford it, they dont come in my size

OK so I win the sad bastard of the year award yet again:

PELICAN CROSSING - a Pedestrian Light Controlled crossing - a set of traffic lights just to stop traffic to help pedestrians cross the road more safely. The lights are set off by pedestrians pressing a button at the roadside. Hence P-e-L-i-Can

PUFFIN CROSSING - a Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent crossing - a more advanced version of a Pelican crossing. Sensors tell how quickly you are crossing the road, and allow extra time for those moving slowly. Does not have a flashing green man/flashing amber phase, but operates like the pedestrian part of traffic lights at a road junction. Particularly suitable for older people and people with mobility difficulties.

Anyone remember Mary, Mungo and Midge?

I wasn't allowed a chopper either, far too small. I did have a Tomahawk though which was a baby Chopper complete with card in wheel to make it sound like a motorbike and ribbons on the handlebars hehe. I was also to small when the next lot came out, had to have a Striker whilst all my mates had Grifters :o

I had a Chopper bike, loved it :) I remember eating spangles and space dust! Ah happy days, being a kid in the '70's (before the days of PC)

I knew that too, because I have the 'Charley Says' DVD with the guys from Dad's Army doing a public information film about these new-fangled crossings :).

Should really buy the sequel sometime. Given all the dangers they warn against I'm surprised any of us survived the 60s and 70s.

Ah  What a con. The new ones dont have that funky "stick shift" center console thing or the long banana seat. Just not the same at all I'm afraid :(

Probably made in China now anyway.

As I recall it was the worlds heaviest, least maneuverable and most cumbersome bike, but at least it was easy to ride two up.

Tufty was a squirel who had a mate who was always getting knocked over (I think!) and kids used to join the Tufty Club to learn how to not get knocked over. I was also in The Tufty Club, but I was very young!
Next we'll be talking about Spangles and Choppers!

Spangles and Chopper bikes......................well wot can I say other than fantastic

But it gave you street cred, at least in an era when a Ford Capri gave you street cred :).

I had one as a kid, but eventually sold it to raise money to buy a computer.

No...the Miele dealer closest to me had no clue what I was talking about and I eventually found a place that stocks it in Nanaimo (miles away) but they will not ship it to the Mainland. Aggh! Still looking though.... :) I am down in Vancouver next week, so I will drop into one or two of the more upmarket places and see if they can help.
